Funny you should bring it up and "yes" he was. Before Jesus no mention of "exorcising" demons was ever mentioned anywhere which kind of invalidates the non-believer who have said this person did not exist. He is the only one who brought attention to the fact people GET "possessed" by evil spirits and THEY are responsible for the actions of those they possess.
