Im from Virginia and feel kinda uncomfortable in my new surrounding.

In East Harlem, the locals fear that gentrification of their neighborhood is simply going to raise rents. If that happens a lot of families will have to leave NYC for good. They don't want that to happen. So yes, you should be afraid because you are not welcomed in the neighborhood. And never think you are.

Look, you "could" get stabbed/mugged/killed just about anywhere . That being said... That is a pretty decent part of town. My wife and I used to live on 108th between 1st and 2nd which is just a few blocks from where you found this room. The best advice I can give you is this, If you carry yourself in such a way that you look like you belong there and you don't draw attention to yourself you will be just fine.

a good friend of mine lives pretty close to there. Its not a bad neighborhood. Of course just like anywhere else in the city, try not to do too much walking around at night by yourself...or walk in the middle of the street. Thats what many women actually do when its not crowded.
