Edit the Boot.ini File
To view and edit the Boot.ini file:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
3. Under System Startup, click Edit.

This is a sample of a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Professional computer.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Copy this code and paste on that boot.ini file

Note:- Do care fully if your windows on C: use
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

If you have the Windows Xp CD you insert it into the computer before start up. Then on start up it will say "hit any key to boot from CD...." or something like that. Hit any key. Then follow the instructions and select the format option. First it may have options to fix the drive just hit esc. Then select the drive you wish to format. Then delete the partition on it. Then Create a partition on it, you can change the size of it but it defaults to the max size. Then install windows on the partition, select NTFS format and not the quick option. Then wait. Remember this will completely delete everything on the drive.

Go to Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View.
Now tick Show hidden files and folders - and untick hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
Click OK when finished. Boot.ini will now be visible in the root of the system partition (usually C:).

A typical dual-boot boot.ini file looks like this: (use attrib -r -h -s Boot.ini to edit it)
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows NT ..."
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
Then delete the Windows XP you don't use from your Boot.ini and all is well.

By the sounds of it you actually did not format your hard drive.

The best way to resolve your situation is to start over.

If you have data on the Hard Drive (different size than the old hard drive) you may want to purchase another hard drive for your XP. <>
If this is true, remove your original hard drive and install the
new hard drive and install XP. Slave the old drive or if it is
a SATA drive connect it in the second SATA port. Copy all
the data to the new hard drive. Then fdisk the old hard
drive (make sure it is the old hard drive you are fdisking -
check by size if you purchased of of a different size).

Use fdisk and remove all particians.

Recreate one or more particians (advise you to create one unless you have a very Hard Drive).

Install XP on the newly particianned Hard Drive.

This should give you a clean copy of XP.

Hope this helps

Good Luck

1. Boot to the working version of XP. Note which one you are choosing.

2. In My Computer --> Tools --> Foler Options --> View edit your filter so you can see all system and operating system files.

3. Edit your c:\boot.ini file and look at the boot directory of the bad WinXP. Wipe out extraneous entries.

4. Use My Computer and delete that subdirectory downward.

Really really easy. Go into Windows Explorer. And figure out which one you are actually using. You will need to go into My Computer, and then Drive C:, once in there most likely you should find two folders labeled WINDOWS. One is the one you are using, and the other is the one you are not using. You are going to have to figure out which one is the one that you use, and which was is not. You should be able to left click the folder once, then right click and go to properties. It will show you the files contained in it. One will have most likely much more than the other one. That one is the one that you are using, the other one is not. IF this doesn't work for you, let me know and I will give you a more complicated route to take care of it.

Sounds like your computer is really slow. Even linux isn't going to run on a computer that is old enough to actually have Win95 on it. Throw the computer away. Hope that doesn't kill the enthusiasm you may have for Linux but it won't even work on a 500mhz machine without a lot of lag time.
