We recently had puppies which came from my moms mini poodle and my chihuahua. Totally unplanned. My question is. How much are these puppies worth and how can i make sure that they find a good home. I dont really like the idea of them being a gift for a child only because i dont want them to be mistreated or neglected. I would keep them myself but theres five. any help or ideas would be great. thank you

Right before we found out she was pregnant we were going to get her spayed and boom! I never heard of this designer dog thing. first time i did was when i was trying to find out what they would look like.lol sounds alittle crazy to me. Im just happy their healthy. I was thinkin about charging nothing but was scared anyone would just grab them without a good intention of giving them a good home. the main concern is finding them a good home.

Oh my, my my.........
Unplanned? Two intact dogs = puppies. Hellooo...

They are mixed breed mutts. They are worth what ever someone feels they should pay for them beyond your expenses.

Take pictures of the pups, make flyers and ask your local vets if they would hang them up. Do the same in any local stores, library, church, organization, etc... who will let you, with the hope that the pups will stay local. Check this out:
http://www.dmpuppylove.com/DJs-Critters/giving_away.html

Anyone who you find has an interest in one, you MUST ask for vet references, check your SPCA to see if they have any complaints against them, talk to their neighbors and GO TO THEIR HOME AND CHECK IT OUT.

Require the new owner to sign a pet adoption contract giving contact information and places of employment. Record the new owners driver license information. Visit the dogs every so often.
Tell them you will take the dogs back if they cannot keep them. Ask them to agree to taking puppy training classes and call them now and then.

Before any pup leaves your home, have it spayed or neutered, vet checked, and micro chipped. Do not give anyone an intact puppy. That will weed out half of the people and also keep those pups from "unplanned puppies".

If you cannot afford to spay/neuter first, go to http://www.petfinder.com/index.html ... find a local rescue who will take your pups. They will have them fixed and then find good homes for them.
If this really was "unplanned", you will not have a problem not making any money off of the pups.
Some rescues will have you foster your own pups while they seek homes for them. This is a good choice as long as it is a reputable rescue who not only checks refernces, but always goes to the potential family's home to check it out.

Don't advertise "FREE" pups. The concern over "Free to Good Home" ads is that when dogs
are given away free, they may be seen as having no value. Free animals too often attract hoarders / collectors who search for "free to good home ads" who won't vet their dogs because they have so many they already cannot care for, or bad breeders who have no clue what they are doing and breed dogs to death under horrible living conditions just to sell puppies and make money, or the worst, many dog fighters love free animals because they use them as bait for their illegal
fighting dogs to rip apart and chew on.

When people get animals for free or too cheaply,
it sends a message that these animals have little
monetary worth. While true animal lovers will
recognize that no amount of money can be assigned to a pet's life, the average person often does not see this intrinsic worth. A free or cheep
pet is more likely to attract impulse purchasers
who have not thought out what it takes to properly
care for this species.

You should expect to recover your expenses and vet bill and NO MORE... after all, they were unplanned and not bred to make money, yes?

Maybe your pups will get lucky and go to an honest person who will provide a safe home and keep the dog forever and love it. Maybe it won't. If you love your pet, you should want to do the best for it to be sure it stays safe.

When people call about the pups, take the names and numbers of all the callers and tell them you will get back to them in an hour. DO NOT answer any questions....NOT EVEN ONE!! Many people, up to no good will leave a number or leave a wrong number. You can only imagine whom you
have avoided in this way... a lab dealer out scrounging up animals to sell, meat buyers, back yard breeders or puppy mills, dog fighters
who need bait dogs, etc.

Good luck & don't forget to socialize those pups all the time.

they're worth whatever you want. if you want to jump on the designer breed bandwagon and be a backyard breeder charge hundreds. if you truely are a good pet owner and this was an accident, and you have full intentions of getting the dogs spayed and neutered so you won't have another litter of mixed breed dogs. then charge a nominal fee. ask for vet references. make the new owners show you proof of vaccines and that they have had the puppies spayed and netuered at an appropriate age. before you find the pups new homes. have them vet checked, get their first vaccines, microchipped and dewormed. socialize them so you know their temperments and which home and lifestyle will fit each pup the best. keep track of them, because that's what responsible pet owners do with puppies.

ok read your update and good for you. you should at least charge something. usually $100 will almost cover your vet expenses. if you are raising puppies right there is no money to be made on it. if you are looking for good homes giving them away free will not get you the homes you want. unless it's a friend that you know for sure will take great care of the pup. my opinion is that if a new owner can't afford $100 then how are they going to afford proper vet care, vaccines, spay or neuter, premium foods and an emergency visit should the need arise. dogs are expensive and you need to make sure the new owners are financially prepared as well to take care of these dogs. free usually or advertising in walmart will only get you backyard breeders and your puppy will have a miserable life.

Why?
There are a lot of people mixing up different pure breed dogs and coming up with these so called designer breeds and trying to get a lot of money for them. As far as I'm concern it's just a mutt.
The hardest part will be for you to find good homes. You might want to advertise in the local paper, bulletin board at the local Super Market or Wal-Mart.

just bcse 2 toy breeds breed doesn't establish a "designer breed" like everyone is making these mix breeds out to be. they are just mutts. i mean no offense to you.
they aren't worth much but i'm sure you can probly get $100 at least for them.
you can screen the adopters... see if they have kids and you can do a home inspection too.

god just think 20 years ago we called them what they are mutts or mix breeds.. now you compound the name and slap a big price tag on them and presto- gourmet breed lol

They are not worth much at all. they are mutts and mutts are a dime a dozen. I would sell them for 100 bucks a piece if that and use the money to be a responsible dog owner and have the dogs spayed and neutard with the money.

Try puppyfind.com, you can search for the mix and check going rates, and adjust your rate accordingly. All dogs were designer dogs at one time, they all have come from mixing different breeds together. So I dont get it why people complain all the time about the designer breeds, opps i mean "Mutts" as they call them. I think that is name calling. I have both, purebred, and a mix of unknown parentage, and would never call any of them, Mutts. They are all dogs, and I love them all the same.

Not worth much. Only purebred dogs that have proven themselves in the show ring, and that have passed all of their certifications, have puppies that are worth something.

I would say, for the cost of shots/worming, $50-$75 each. Use that money to have your dog spayed.

Also, have a spay/neuter contract with the new owners.

Kudos to you for not trying to pawn these mixed puppies off as a "rare" breed! :o)

Where are you located? I love my poodle chihuahua (rescue) girl and if close enough may consider another.

must...get...puppies...fixed...then after you should charge the new owners the price of the fixings. so you get your money back...unfortantly ple call these "breeds/mutts" designer dogs. so alot of ple are looking for them... make sure you send them to good homes by observing the family and the person coming to pick them up.
good luck to them
and yourself

Please email me if you're interested in a sample questionnaire for prospective owners as well as a contract... placing puppies well is hard work.
