I don't believe in the Bible because it was written by man. man can and will say anything to get others to believe as man so wishes. There is no way that anyone can convince me that IF any of the Bible is actually true that the man who wrote it down did not embellish for his own personal needs/gain.
I believe for those who do believe the Bible can be something that is very soothing and helpful to them in their personal beliefs. However I do not believe any of it is fact. Skeletal facts? Maybe - but even there I have my doubts.
The Bible is a well written book that can be used to uplift people or as a shield to excuse all sorts of "sins" in God's name. There is just no way that I am going to believe that God condones a book being used in His name to excuse any kind of abhorrent behavior. And that's basically what I see when I see someone with a Bible or quoting it.
So no I don't believe in the Bible. I do believe in it's powers though. And to be quite cliche here - Powers can be used for good or evil. And it is used for both in my opinion.

I don't believe the Bible is true because it was written by a bunch of people from centuries ago, before we knew the earth was flat or revolved around the sun so why would they know the meaning of life any more than I, the Bible also states a number of things that are impossible and I'm surprised not everyone has figured out, like if creationism is true then not only would we all be inbred but we would be inbred to the point of being mutated beyond the ability to even live, there would be flaws such as lungs not working properly, also the Bible states that the earth is younger than many fossils that have been found so that should be enough proof that it's not all true

People who don't believe in the Bible can tell you they have no reason to believe in it. People who -do- believe in the Bible can't tell you why, only that they believe it's the word of God and they -have- to believe it. If you don't believe it's the word of God, then all it is is an interesting collection of ancient writings.

If you -do- believe it, then how do you believe it? Was it meant to be taken literally, word for word? Or were some of the stories meant to be taken as symbolic or allegorical?

And what about the places where it contradicts itself? It does, lots of places! Is that important? Other places seem to have been edited various times, for instance there are two separate distinct creation stories, and two stories of Noah and the Ark. Some editor couldn't figure out which one to include so he just put them both in! Are both stories true?

People who do believe the Bible often pick and choose. The parts they don't like, they'll say 'Oh, that's not important'. For instance here in the US, Christians point to fairly obscure passages in the Mosaic Law of the Old Testament banning homosexuality. But they insist the WHOLE Mosaic Law was made obsolete by Jesus. So they're just looking for a passage to back up how they feel anyway.

I actually like the Bible very much. I've studied it, read books about it, taken classes on it. I find it very interesting. But I don't believe it is 'holy' or a revelation from God or anything like that. But people who do believe that don't even agree on what the Bible says!

Have you read that thing? Geez.

Well, I took a class in the Bible through my university. We read it all the way through and our professor gave us lectures on the known details about the authors of each text. It is an interesting piece of literature to study. The historical inaccuracies and the contradictions between texts are overwhelming. However, the reason I don't believe the stories in the Bible to be theologically true is the the same reason I don't believe that Minerva really guided Ulysses back from Troy. It is simply not a convincing argument and belief without a logical basis is a violation of reason.

The bible is nothing more than a collection of parables. Not any different than the stories of ancient Greek or Roman mythology. The bible is not a history book, the bible is not an eye witness account, the bible is merely a book written by men for the purpose of exerting control over other men.

Why do you believe in the bible?

Cuz is in the prologue it mentions that it has been changed and is under constant revision.

It contradicts itself. I'm not too worried about numbers...18 and 48..(i made those up..but i know issues like that occur) i dont' care.....but there are other greater contradictions..

Paul in general contradicts himself.....
western culture is entirely based off roman culture.
Paul established things that were sooo similar to roman culture.
for instance...x-mas being on december 25th....no christian i know thinks jesus was actually born on december 25th...its just a symbolic date.....but it coincides exactly with roman mythology.....same with easter. SUNday....being the day off.......goes back to jesus's birhtdy and the sun god.

Jesus....which Christianity is based off...his purpose was to bring jews back to judaism...the old testament.......not the gentiles.....then paul which Christianity is also based off of....says the old testament doesn't matter....and his goal was to convert the gentiles.

Also Paul disagreed with all of jesus's apostles and never met jesus himself.

Its also historical proof....the gospels named after jesus's apostles were written years after jesus and not by them. A said apostle talked and the people complied what he said about jesus and then later it became an new testament gospel.

All that together....are my issues with the bible.....
