Medicine is a boon.

It is both. Medicine by keeping people alive that would have normally died cause people with defective genes to reproduce and create more people prone to medical problems. Defective genes keep appearing spontaneously in every generation. If these genes are kept viable through medicine then the general health of the whole population will continue to decline generation after generation. On the other hand fixing non genetic problems like broken arms etc. are a boon to keeping people productive and eliminating misery.
