I smoked 10 years before quitting cold turkey. I think the key for me was to figure out WHY I smoked. I smoked out of boredom and the hand to mouth thing. So I filled my time with busy work and found ways to distract my mouth. I chewed a LOT of pen caps but it worked. In the beginning it also helped that I would pretend to smoke a pen. Seriously. It helped a LOT. I quit three years ago. Good luck!

I smoked for 55 years until nearly 6 months ago. I have COPD and had an exacerbation. Ended up in the ER, nearly having respiratory failure. I almost died.
It was an extremely frightening thing, and I never want to go through that again. I was in the hospital for four days, so they put a nicotine patch on me. I continued with that for a month, and then switched to Chantix. But I quit using that about 11 days later because I was having some side effects, and I haven't smoked since.
If you are smoking and want to quit, this way of quitting wasn't that bad. By being on the patch first, I got used to not smoking, and reaching for one. Then the Chantix helped with the cravings. Normally people stay on Chantix for at least 3 months.
Once in awhile, I would like a cigarette the way they used to taste, but the feeling doesn't last more than a few seconds. I will never start smoking again, because that afternoon in the ER scared me big time. My lungs are not in good shape, and I get out of breath very easily, but I don't cough any more!
I never thought I would be able to quit, but here I am 6 months smoke free, and I am so glad. I am proof that it can be done!

Hi. I smoked for about 15 years. I kept getting a sore throat and had trouble breathing. When my father in-law found out he was dying from lung cancer I decided to quit smoking or I was going to end up the same way. It's been more than 10 years since I quit and I feel great.

I quit smoking 10 years ago next month after smoking so many cigarettes per day I purposely didn't count for 20 years. At least 10 other people quit because they figured if I could, they could :) Are you taking advantage of any of the new pharmaceuticals or counseling? Both will double your chances for success. Be very sure WHY you're quitting and don't lose sight of your long-term goal. You can succeed!!!

I smoked a pack or more a day for about 14 years. It wasn't until my daughter was born that I quit. I didn't want to subject her to cigaret smoke. I remembered when I was a child and my father smoked. The car filled with smoke and flying ashes. In my mind I could still smell the stink from the cigarets even till this day!

26 years. 2 packs a day. Smokefree for 2 years. Don't "try" to quit, you'll find an excuse to fail. Just gather the resources, strength and bravery then quit. Afterwards start living your brand new life free of addiction. So much of it goes hand in hand. You'll be surprised at all you will give up. You'll be astonished at the multitude of rewards gotten back.

10+ years smoker
quit 6 months ago. never again. running up to 5 miles now, all urges gone.
Never again! freeeedom~ air is good.
more money in my pocket, no stink on my body, freedom to hang out with other people that don't smoke. able to work harder and longer with out ever getting winded. amazing how fast the body can recover if you give it the chance before you permanently damage it. oh and whiter teeth are a bonus too. your mouth is never truly clean as a smoker. imagine going to kiss your other with a smoky mouth if they are a non smoker! you kinda ruin your chances with being with someone thats healthy. oh and we owe taking care of our bodies to our significant other as well.
your body is awesome, respect it more then that, it's all we have,
once you accept that your doing something that is killing you and permanently damaging your body, and you learn to love good health, the rest is easy.
