If I get a life sentence for murder, should my sons, grandsons and great grandsons have to serve a life sentence too?

That is the way God does things according to the bible.
Deuteronomy 5:7-9

Aha, I found your question with the Bible verse attached! Let us dissect it:
Deu 5:9 You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them.
Here He is speaking of worshipping other gods...
For I Jehovah your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me,
Wait a minute! Visit the iniquity....of THOSE WHO HATE ME. That is a very specific part of this verse. Beliefs are usually handed down generationally, if a parent hates God (same as unbelief) then that person's children probably will too. If a parent smokes or drinks alcohol, the chances are much greater the children will. I don't believe in the pop psychology of "generational sins," because the Holy Spirit can break that cycle wherever He wants to. We are convicted by the Holy Spirit, not of ourselves. If you have any love for your children's children's children, then maybe you should soften your heart toward God. Otherwise, they will probably hate God too and there are consequences for that.

You need to choose better bible studies (if you studied at all)
Using the scripture that you chose in the manner you chose to use it then it would also mean that if your parents pleased God then the next thousand generations would have it made in the shade.

This refers to the results of sinful behavior of the parent.
An abusive parent will leave scars on the childeren, and be passed to the grandchilderen, etc. Unless there is an intervention by one of those generations turning to God and breaking the chain.
The childeren of a father who goes to jail suffer as well as the father.
Sin always effects more than just the sinner. We do not live in a vacuum.

You are not understanding what you read. It is to say if a people fall from the grace of God and turn their back on him not only will they suffer but their children will also suffer this saying was made to tell the people if they left God they would be taken over by another people and their sons and daughters would be under the other peoples thumb for many generations before they would return to God. You Will also see this with people who tend to be drug addicts or have drinking problems there kids also seem many times to fall into the same trap or cycle of abuse, it takes many generations to fully change the problem. In other words people pass down there problems to their children, God does not do this to their children they do it to their children.

Exodus 20:5
God already does that to the people that hate Him.
Ezekiel 18:1 says that each will be judged for his own sins, not the sins of parents or children. Jeremiah 31 states the same.

No. If that's your religious belief, that's your privilege. Though I assume you're not a Christian--since Jesus taught that each woudld answer only for his/her own sins.

But in any case--America is a country of religious freedom. No real American wants that kind of religious dictatorship --only the religious right-wing fanatics espouse that sort of injustice.

You are very misinformed. Where does the Bible say such a rediculous thing.

Deut 24:16 "Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin.
