I think everyone see NYC as this amazing place to live with so many opportunities. You watch shows like "Sex and the City" or "Friends" and they make it seem like it's wonderful with tons of places to go and things to see. I have lived right outside of NYC my whole life and the city is definitely fun. However, I just graduated college last year and I actually want to move out of the area.
California is great too b/c of the warm weather and the beaches. It is a much more relaxed vibe than NYC.
However, both NYC and Cali are so overpriced and the traffic is horrible in both places. It is very difficult for college aged kids to afford to live in either place even with a good job.

Everyone can't move to New York because people can't afford to live in New York... or choose to spend their money on other things and stay where they are.
Generally speaking, jobs in New York make MORE money than those in other parts of the country...this seems great to a lot of people, until they realize the cost of living here is so incredibly high...People also want to move here after college because some of the BEST companies are here...it's an amazing place for Publishing (HarperCollins, Simon and Schulster, St. Martins etc.) television (HBO, ABC, NBC etc.) Art (All of the museums) Restaurant management as well as for those that go into hospitality...There's really not a job that can't be found here that won't PROBABLY pay you at least a few dollars more than you'd make elsewhere.
But I think it's worth it!

Just like the song says, "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere." New York is seen as the capital of business, commerce, fashion, theater, etc., in the U.S. There's a perception that to reach the top, you should move to New York. It is the largest city in the U.S., btw.
California, on the other hand, I think, is seen as the show biz capital of the U.S. So, people who want to become famous or celebrities always move out to California.
I think it amounts to the would-be shakers and movers of this world following their dreams of making it big. Sadly to say, most of them come crashing back to reality soon enough. It's very expensive to live either place.

I don't want to move to New York. The winters are to cold and it's to expensive to live there. I don't want to move to California. The State has to many ridicules laws. It's become almost fascists.

Because New York kicks *** lol.
I agree with Lydia H with the fashion, theatre, etc... New York is a great place with alot of history. There is so much going on and you can find people of all kinds. Every kind of culture, ethnicity is in New York. Its amazing but too expensive.

I grew up in Miami and married a sparkling Yorker too. I divorced him 9 years later. Cracker+ Yankee is taking a huge possibility. If the hot Yorkers all left Florida the Cubans could nonetheless be there so i think of i could want the Yankees.

its become a STEREOTYPE
im afraid to say
its mainstream
it sounds like the best thing in the world
i grew up in ny, and sometimes i want to move elsewhere
if everyone moved to cali or ny, it would be like overpopulation on either coast of the US, not good LOL
and overpopulation would drive people out so thats why not everyone wants to move to those states

First of all, no one wants to go to California.
Second of all New York is like the second capital of the US. (in fact it was the capital after Philly, and before Washington.) but New York isn't that great.
Chicago is better.
