Unless in a limestone cave, these are not words I would really use in my day-to-day life...

The English equivalent to the French trick:

"le stalacMite Monte (Mounts) et le stalacTite Tombe (± Tumbles)" [you may impress your friends]

could be:

stalaGmite with a G like in Ground
stalaCtite with a C like in Ceiling

When a sM and a sT meet, they form a Pilar and everything eventually is for the best!

Stalagmites are made of calcium carbonate and minerals and only occur in limestone caves.

I hope you have the right word, because "stalagmite" never comes up in common conversation unless you're a giving a tour of caverns or commenting on your cave expedition. I've used it in that sense, and I won a 5th grade spelling bee with the word stalagmite.

"While visiting the Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico, I saw incredible stalagmites and stalactites formations."

If you aren't applying to be a tour guide, I wouldn't think you'd have to memorize the word. Anyway stalagmites have a g therefore they are the ones that come out of the ground. Stalactites have a c, thus the come from the ceiling.

It's the drippings coming up from the bottom of a cave.

You could say.. I saw a stalagmite when exploring a cave.

Yeah not that interesting! lol
But you can memorize it this way
Stalactite is the top of the cave and it has a c in it, like a ceiling.
Stalagmite is the other one!

A stalagmite is a mighty pillar that rises from the cave floor....you can remember it because it is a mighty pillar...on the other hand a stalactite hangs tightly from the ceiling.

That's how I remembered it when I was younger.

Sentence: We are going to see the stalagmite's that have formed in the cave.

Stalagmites & stalagtites form in caves, from the minerals
contained in dripping underground water.
Stalagmites form on the floor, stalagtites on the ceiling.
I remember that the 'm' stands for mountains.

Use the definition as a sentence. If you live near Virginia, visit the Luray Caverns.

i dunno.. You'd just use it when talking about a stalagmite in a cave.

Ex: This Stalagmite was formed from chemicals dropping down in the cave.

i don't know... how about "A stalag-MIGHT be found in a cave?" hahaha you just can't write it with might.

"Don't trip over that stalagmite!" OTOH, the stalagtite "holds tight" to the ceiling...
