For a self defense hand gun i would get a
*****F N FIVE SEVEN*****
FN 5.7 the ultimate combat/self defense pistol in my estimation shoots the fast LOW RECOIL 5.7x28mm HIGH PENETRATION rounds that is very accurate at a long distance.. even the hollow points are very penetrable.
With low recoil and high penetration (plus a 20 round mag) you put this gun in hands of a unskilled user they will have the ability for faster follow up shots and engage multiple targets easy and accurately. Police treat suspects with these guns in there hands as if the have a rifle.. And take cover. This is how accurate these hand guns are.
5.7x28mm round shoots about 2000 fps (feet per second)
45 acp shoots about 850 fps....
You also can get a 10 round mag extension.. 30 rounds in a semi auto Pistol...is pretty deadly.....

8 FN herstal only makes the Five Seven
I think is everything a first time gun owner needs... high cap round, easy to maintain plastic for low maintenance...

Plus you can't beat an ak-47 semi auto, 12 gauge shot gun pump i like the mossburg 590's.

Ak-47 ton of differnt parts will never jam time tested and proven, may not be *** accurate as many other guns but still very good gun to put your life in its hands man things that don't jam and have high cap rounds are great.

12 gauge.. well the clack of the the action loading a round in the chamber has universaly stopped more bar fights, people breaking in to homes and so on. Than any gun in the world.

Plus they are many different style rounds. shotguns are a well rounded firearm. They can take large prey with slugs, with shot small animals, fowl.

Survival? You'll need a .22 for close range work and small game. The Ruger 10/22 will work well. Home defense: The .380 will serve you well with the proper defensive or pre-fragmented ammo. General all around defensive/hunting-backup, the .357 is great and Taurus makes a decent gun. SKS? Well, I prefer the full-size 7.62x51 NATO like in the M-14 or FAL, but a 7.62x39 will do in a pinch (or even a 5.56/.223).

Don't forget a good knife like a K-Bar.

Good luck.

A great question, one that will bring a lot of answers too. Every body has a favorite "survival/defense gun. My self included.
I believe a handgun is a last line of defense. So I'd say that a long gun would be my first choice. Since It's to put food on the table as well as stop a big critter in an emergency, I'd go with either a 12 gauge shotgun using shot for food, and slugs for bears or 2 legged vermin. Or, a combination rifle, like the old savage over under, with one bbl chambered for .22 long rifle and one chambered in 12 or 20 gauge shotgun. For defense, I'd chose something in .308 that was magazine fed. I'm not gonna list brands or models, thats up to each person to decide on. But the .308 is a good all around cartridge, carried in just about every sporting goods and hardware store in america.
On a handgun, if I was combining food getting with self defense, I'd go with a revolver in either .357 magnum or .44 magnum. With the .357, you can also shoot .38 splc and shot shell loads to take anything from snakes to deer and a black bear in a pinch with 158grn JSP .357 mag. A 44 mag also allows you to fire .44 spcl loads and shot shell loads making both firearms very versatile. In self defense only roll, I carry a semi atuomatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP a well proven manstopper, I have also taken a doe and a hog with it. Others will have different ideas, and sound reasons for their choices, but these are mine, I am comfortable with them, know what they can and can't do and would rely on them in any emergency. In a final note, you mention the SKS rifle. The SKS makes a very good choice too. Chambered in 7.62x39 caliber, it is basically a .308 short and has performance very close to that of a 30-30 winchester. The rifle is fairly cheap to buy,if you avoid the chinese version due to it's poor metallurgy and quality control, it is very reliable, easy to maintain, parts are cheap and accessories are numerous to customize it to your personal needs. I've taken deer sized animals with them and as you well know, they are more than adequate for 2 legged critters too.

As many have said, one gun won't do it all. And it depends on the survival situation.

Unless you are in an area with large predators, you can make a living with a Ruger 10/22. I'd suggest you get several 30 or 50 round magazines from Ram-line (http://www.ram-line.com/ ), and a couple of bricks of whatever .22 LR ammo your rifle likes best. You can use it for all sorts of small and medium game, and in a survival situation, you can use it to kill deer. Don't mistake killing for a real survival situation with hunting, you won't be paying attention to game laws, you will be spotlighting, night-hunting and otherwise bushwacking any deer, legal antlers or age or not. Other advantages for the Ruger 10/22 are that ammo is light so you can carry a lot, ammo is plentiful and easy to find, .22 LR rifles are relatively quiet, and the Ruger 10/22 is arguably the best .22 semi-automatic rifle on the market.

While a Ruger 10/22 can be used for defense, I'd feel lots better with a .357 Magnum revolver on my belt for defense against two-legged predators as well as 4-legged predators. My personal preference would be for a Smith and Wesson M-686, but Taurus makes some good revolvers as well. For general purpose use, you need a 4" barrel as it is easier to conceal. If your survival scenario is strictly an urban one, a good revolver is much more important than a rifle.

If you are in an area with large predators, you will need a larger bore rifle. Rather than opting for an SKS, I suggest a Marlin M-336 in your choice of .30-30 WCF or .35 Rem, or a Rossi M-92 SRC in .44 RemMag. Neither are ideal for hunting bear, but they will be better than a .22, and they are inexpensive and plentiful.

The reason I discount the SKS for survival is the fact that good quality hunting ammo in 7.62x39mm Soviet is not common, nor is it cheap. And while FMJ ammo might meet Geneva Convention requirements, it is not good hunting ammunition. The SKS is also not noted for accuracy in comparison to hunting rifles.

Ammo availability is also a matter to consider for a survival situation. You can get .30-30 WCF ammo, .22 LR ammo, and .44 RemMag almost anyplace ammo is sold. 7.62x39mm Soviet and .380 ACP is a little less common.

The above suggestions consider mainly a wilderness survival scenario. If you want to prepare for a survival situation that involves combat against military forces, I suggest the same weapons. You can use them to acquire any offensive weapons your enemy might have.

self defence use will depend on the situation.as a weapon for in your home i suggest a pump shotgun in 20 or 12 guage. as a concealed carry gun i personal carry a bersa 380 thunder but i really like the taurus mt 85 .38 special.survival guns are not my specialty but i would try the springfield arms "survival gun". it is a break action 410 bore/.22 LR. plus they are pretty cheap($100-220)

What you have in mind is decent, but think about how much those are gonna weigh. Id go with a pump 12 gauge, and use several types of ammo, and you have a gun that can kill just about anything. Use shot for squirrels and rabbit. Slugs for any kind of deer, and other medium to big game. A .357 would be a nice addition to the shotgun though.

I'm not gonna get into this question since it really isn't specific enough about what you are trying to "survive." But there is one thing in the answers that bothers me. The .380 handgun round is mentioned by several people. This is a very weak round and is not used by anyone that is serious about defense. For handguns I would use a 9mm at a minimum, and would much prefer a .45, .40., or .357 mag.

Depends on where you are trying to survive. Your more important question should where am I going and what is at the top of the food chain.
In general though 9mm or 357sig will do, unless your in bear country. Then it's time to get a .460 S&W or .480 ruger revolver.
As far as carrying a rifle a lever action Ruger in .44mag is very versitale. But if your not afraid of eaten a cheap buy is Henry's breakdown semiauto .22LR.
For defense go with .40S&W or .380acp in hollowpoint if legal in your state.
And the SKS is legal depending on what state you live in. Or like in illinois where you need a special lincesne for it.

Well, anyway you go, you're making a compromise. No one gun will do everything well. For instance, a shotgun is great for defense at close range, but virtually worthless at long range. It also tends to shred what you kill with it, esp small game. Military pilots were, and I think still are, issued a folding .22 cal rifle and a bigger pistol, either 9mm or .45 auto. If I could have two guns, I'd take any high quality .22 rifle for hunting and a good .45 auto pistol for defense.

I honestly have not something against legally possessing weapons. i've got been to the pistol selection myself, in simple terms for kicks. That reported, i don't very own one, through fact i might probable finally end up shooting somebody. maximum murders interior the U.S. are committed by using people the sufferers knew- relatives, spouses, "acquaintances"- not strangers. That reported the 2nd modification talks some "nicely-regulated defense force" which by using definition potential the acquisition, possession, and use of weapons would be REGULATED (law, administration of a few style). i discover it actual loony that one desires a driving force's license to possess and perform a motor vehicle in this u . s ., yet does not desire a license to possess and perform a gun. somebody could be shot! (lol). whats up, and if the wonderful-wing Rednecks (additionally sarcasm) ever get too a techniques out of hand, that's mandatory to possess a gun and initiate a revolution.
