and you ignored her, and ZAP! The cable went out in the middle of answering a question posted by Uncle Wayne. What did I miss, and should I be back on here since it is still storming?

I bought the computer, just like I bought the house. She lives with me because she is frail. She is very jumpy in storms. Her mother was struck by lightening, in front of my mother and her siblings. I do have the safeguards, but the cable went out. No cable, no internet.

Hey Dave! And Spotlite, you are right about honoring my mother, but she went to bed. We have plenty of time together!
Diane, thanks for the lightening rod suggestion, as we do have plenty of storms, unless we are in the middle of a drought! I do have a circuit breaker. Changed over shorly after I moved into the house.

If you change your surge protectors and make sure everything is grounded you should be ok.. The last zap could have damaged the old surge protectors... Better to spend $15.00 on a new surge protector than spend $2500.00 on a new computer. At least that's the way I look at it.. ..

My old zapped surge protectors (I have 2 of them) are used for plugging in lamps and other inexpensive items...

If you live in an area prone to lightning think about installing a lightning rod or 2 on your house... They are relatively inexpensive (Under $150.00 each) and can help direct potential lightning into the ground rather than your wiring.. Also change to a breaker system rather than a fuse system if possible... Breakers will often trip cutting off a surge before it reaches even as far as the surge protector..

As others have said, if the lighting strikes close enough to your house or the lines running into your house you could fry some equipment. This is because it can cause a surge of electricity that can fry components not designed for such high current or voltage. A good surge protector will protect the equipment. However, you will want surge protectors on ALL lines running into your computer from the outside - this includes the power, telephone (if you use slow dial-up), network cable, etc. If you have a laptop and wireless Internet, you could still safely surf the Internet on battery power (electric plug not plugged into the computer). However, your wireless router would still be at risk (if it doesn't have surge protection). Another word of caution: Just having the device turned off will not totally protect you. If a device is plugged into the electrical outlet (or other lines leading to the outside of your house), a lightning strike can be of enough power that it will jump open switches. BTW - this goes for all your electric appliances in your house: television, radio, refrigerator, etc. (refrigerators and the like are less susceptible than items using semi-conductor components).

This is too funny because my elderly mother lives with us and she has said that exact same thing to me when I am on the computer! I told her it's as safe as having a light on during a thunderstorm and that was the end of that.

Best thing is to obey your mother. I am of a matriarcal Nation and women rarely say things without having second thoughts about them. Whatever she seems foolish or even purely off her rocket, she is your mother and obedience is a way to show respect to an elder.

Presumably you can find out what you missed by looking later -- if you care. You are safe enough from the storm; there are lightning arrestors throughout the cable system, including one where the cable enters your house.
