If, as some people claim, every word of the Bible is literally true, why then would Jesus teach moral lessons using fictional stories?

This is one of the reasons I NEVER believed in a literalist interpretation of the Bible.

So, Annie, are you saying Jesus was being deliberately deceptive? Isn't that both dishonest and detrimental to the spread of his message?

Johnny, are you saying it is not possible to understand the Bible without direct help from God, help which he withholds from some people?

DH, I understand a literal interpretation makes no sense. Why don't biblical literalists understand this?

The Bible can be interpreted in many ways. That's why there are so many denominations of Christianity. No one really knows which interpretation is correct, so why bother believing at all?

No the writers of different books interior the OT did not write in parables. there is thoughts with a ethical to it interior the old testomony - yet those are genuine thoughts. Jesus not in simple terms spoke in parables he defined the foremost ones and made clean the meanings of them. No the found out of the time did not tutor or talk like our Lord and Messiah: Matthew 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not through fact the scribes.

One can't use a literal interpretation -
The genres of the Bible include narrative, poetry, proverbial literature, wisdom discourse, a treaty (that's what Deuteronomy is, believe it or not!), legal codes, genealogies, biography (that is what the Gospels are!), personal letters and general letters, rhetoric (an art form in the ancient world), riposte, and apocalyptic.

The Bible contains a mix of both literal and figurative statements. The real talent is in discerning which is which. It's one of the gifts of the Spirit and so not everyone has it. BTW Jesus used parables to appeal to people on a deep spiritual level. He actualy used them to confuse those who thought that they were very wise but who actually were NOT - in general the Pharisees and scribes.

The Bible itself explains about the parables...... He spoke in them so the Pharasies and others would not and could not know what He was speaking of..... they do have literal truths......... God bless

Jesus said, search the scriptures, like one digging for buried treasure, and in them you will find me.
