The modern Main Battle Tank in use today is the M1 series tanks. There are different varients from the first M1 abrams tank that had a 105mm main gun to the M1A3 abrams which is digitized, and has the 120mm main gun. All of which are pretty good tanks, until the Iraq war and the use of large IED's which are now causing major damage to the abrams tanks.

What bill s said is true but upgrades being applied to abrams armor are predicted to reduce destroyed abrams by up to 80 %. The next generation of tanks after the abrams will actually probably be robotically controled variants as there is no plans to produce a next generation tank after abrams. The stryker apc is actually being mounted with a high velocity cannon and electronics trials to see if it can be made autonomious and therefore reduce risk to troops. Abrams is expected to be in service for at least 20 more years though
