A stop sign means to come to a point of no motion. It's not a yield sign. If they meant for people just to slow down, they would have installed a yield sign. When the person in front of you comes to a complete stop, you don't always know if there's traffic coming or a police officer, etc.
As a side note: I've driven in all 50 states and all through Canada, and in my experiences, I've found Californians to be the worst drivers ever.

This is what I expect of all drivers.
What annoys me are
* Drivers who I see disobeying the laws and safety prudence
* People on Yahoo answers who behave like they are some of those drivers & asking questions about how good drivers annoy them
There are hybrid cars that when you slow down, the forward energy is captured, so you do not wear the brakes, then when stopped, there is no gas consumption or pollution, then when you move again, the earlier stored up energy is transferred to the wheels.

No. I'd rather waste a little gas and stop for a couple of seconds than be smeared on the front end of an 18-wheeler because I wanted to shave a couple of seconds from my arrival time.
This is why accidents are so common here in america roads. People are not polite, they see every other driver on the road as an obstacle!

Well, actually you are right! You should quit wasting gas and turn your car off at the stop sign......
I'm quite surprised when someone in front of me insists on coming to a full stop at a stop sign. Im elated, excited too because there might be a few law-biding citizens left who restore my faith in human nature.....
As for braking to a stop and wearing out brakes........if you gently brake early, you won't wear them out as quickly as you would if you apply the brakes late and hard.
If you come off the gas earlier and scan, you will see any hazards at the upcoming intersection before you arrive.
And then there is the question........is that a two way or a four way stop?
Laws are for Public Safety, and I do think you are part of the Public. If someone else didn't completely stop and hit you, how would you look at it then?

What really annoys me is the ones who try to nudge me with their cars when I'm on my bicycle. Quite often the ones who can't read the word 'stop'. They usually can read my single digit salute and understand my stream of profanity and the dent in their fender left by my size eleven shoe so they can't be completely stupid. What I would like to know is; how much of a hurry are you in to get where you want to go? There can't be anything in California worth getting annoyed about waiting to see or do. If Californians can elect Arnie as Governor then they deserve to to be t-boned by people running stop signs.

If I know the person behind me is annoyed with my complete stop, then my stop will be longer as I carefully check both directions for oncoming cars, and just to be sure, check again. Then proceed slowly through the stop when I am sure the coast is clear. Haste makes waste people. There is no reason to rush, a stop sign is there for a reason. Not to piss you off, put possibly to safe your life.

The signs are there, COME ON!! obey them...the fool who rear-ended me at a stop and ran last year is walking to work now. My lawyer took him to the cleaners for my and my wife's back injuries & the damage to my car. Obey the signs because you never know who else is driving, maybe some idjit with your attitude, come on!!

Oh no, I just love it, because then I don't have to turn on the red lights and siren and write 'em a big fat ticket! And despite your ignorant remark, it does NOT waste gas. Go find the fool who told you that and slap him upside the head for being such a dumb jerk! Don't worry, it's justifiable smack-a-cide!

Stop means stop. It is not a suggestion. The fine and points are pretty heavy to say nothing of the possibility of causing an accident.
