I think you could tell your supervisor that you must be given reasonable hours or you'll give your two weeks' notice. I'm assuming they didn't tell you about the midnight hours when they hired you. They will likely say that's a condition of the job and tell you to leave before the 2 weeks are up, but it's unlikely they'd be upset at you personally.

Been there done that. By all means do give your boss a 2 weeks notice that you are quiting. It WILL look good on your next job. With you being 16, I assume that you are still in school. So you can just tell your boss that you need to quit work so that you can get your self ready for school. And also you need to let your boss know that the hours that you are working will interferee with your school.
Who knows, by telling your boss that your hours will interfer with your school, they might even give you different hours to work. If that would be the case where you could work there and go to school as well.
As far as you missing your moms birthday because you had to work, well I have had that happen to me as well. What we did in those cases was we planned around our work schedule. We might have the party in the morning or sometimes in the evening, and in really bad times we would have it on a different day all together.

If you have been a dishwasher there just 2 months, it really shouldn't be hard to tell them. It's not like when a V.P. is preparing to resign from a Fortune 500 co. after 20 years.
Basically, just keep it simple and tactful. Tell your hiring manager that you appreciate the opportunity that he/she gave you, but that you are resigning for personal reasons. Be sure to just use "personal reasons" as your official reason. Common courtesy is to give 2 weeks notice, and if you do so they'll definitely appreciate it. They can find another dishwasher. As long as they're given enough notice to prepare for bringing in a replacement, they won't be upset at you.

I don't know that I would even give 2 weeks. It's not like they need 2 weeks to train a new dishwasher. No way you should be working that late at 16. Just tell them you can't handle it with school and tell them you need to quit right away because school is more important.

The job might not be a great one, but quitting because you can't make one event isn't a good idea. That's the nature of working, regardless of what kind of job you have. Plus, it doesn't look great when you try to apply for a new job and you say on the application that you only worked at your last job for 2 months.
If you MUST quit, a handwritten note would do the trick, just saying "thanks for the opportunity, but I am entering my 2 weeks notice at this time. My last day will be xx/xx/xxxx."

If I were you I'd just talk to him. Tell them that your mother is more important than anything, and thats her special day. If you really want to keep this job, just tell him that you'll work a doubleshift the next time around. It's not hard to wash dishes at all, the business will not crumble down. If he really is an *** and you really want to leave this job, just leave. I know for sure that you aren't going to put that on your resume for whatever you are going to do. This is a job to save and pay bills, not to gain experience. I wouldn't stress over it.

Just tell them - it's OK to quit, you aren't doing anything wrong. You can write a note just saying "effective {date} I am resigning my job with {company} and sign it and hand it to your boss.
I'm sure you aren't the first person your boss has ever had quit. Stop worrying.

Give your 2 week notice as this will give your employer a chance to replace you. As for your reason, be honest and just let your boss know that you appreciated the opportunity to work for him/her but the schedule isn't working out for you..
