I am a SH(Ships Serviceman) and I am wondering what is the average length of time that I would be away from home if I were to be stationed on a ship or whatever.

I made more than a dozen major deployments and it all depended on the world situation and how my ship, at the time, fit into the big picture. Carriers were the hardest deployers. My longest deployment on a carrier was a year then we turned around two months later and deployed for another nine months. So that was 21 out of 23 months actually deployed and not counting workups! My deployments on "Gators" were usually six months or so - but even some of those were extended by a month or two. And yes, they also do workups prior to deployment You can figure that with the current tempo of operations that a six month cruise is the norm. Your ship will never return early from a cruise, unless its local ops, but they sure can be extended. You SHs do a lot of hard work that hardly anyone knows about but it is greatly appreciated by those of us who do know. You have a direct affect on the crew's morale. Lots of luck shipmate.

In todays Navy most deployments are of the 6-8mo length, Now depending on what type of ship or squadron you are assigned to there is usually a rotation so I would that during a 4yr enlistment you may see 2 deployments of at least 6mo. Also figure in that your ship may get a 6mo-1yr upkeep at a ship yard so it just really all depends. I am a ret mm1 so yea I did well over 10yrs of sea duty just keep your wits find something to take your mind off being out on the water you find this very helpful in dealing with stress of deployment.

Our daughter just finished 6 years in the Navy. A typical deployment is 6 months. Depending on what is going on, it can go to 8 months.

The average is 6mos. but they can go as long as 9mos. OPeration Enduring Boredom... Enduring Freedom West Pac was one of those cases. It all depends on where you are stationed and what the commitments are at the time. I am sure that you have heard that rotation times are changing as is the Navy as to meet operational commitments.

It depends on what surface vessel you will be assigned to; it could be anything from 6 to 18 months depending.

depends on the OPTEMPO of the ship. ships get underway frequently for periods of time shorter than a typical deployment of 4 months or longer. you could get underway monday, come back on friday, you could be away from home port for a few weeks at a time. you could easily spend 10 months of the year at sea and it will be broken up into smaller chunks.

I thought the navy just went to 7 months in and 7 months out. But you will find that you will do between 6-7 months for a deployment.
