6-8 weeks before, one or two is not enough time to get time off work and make travel plans.

Invitations are supposed to be sent out 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. This gives people enough time to send the RSVP card back.

More than that.
I'd send them out at least two months in advance.
MORE if it happens to be a destination wedding, or if a majority of the guests are out of the area.
I'm sending my invites out super early since it is a hot spot for vacationers that time of year and I want to ensure they all get accommodations and can save up for a room for the night.

at least 2 months before. 6-8 weeks is a good time frame and have the RSVP back 3-4 weeks before the wedding.

What kinda of wedding is it? Usually I'd say 4-6 months in advance, especially if it's going to be a distance for anyone for the save the dates, and 2 months in advance for the invites...
If it's a REALLY small casual wedding with just a few people invited to a nearby location you can go with a few weeks out, I guess...

typically it's 2 months unless the wedding is on a holiday weekend then you might want to go at least 3 months, or use save the date cards. Remember to make your RSVP date at least 2 weeks before the wedding. Its hard to order the cake, tables, chairs, favors and such without knowing how many ppl you have attending.

At LEAST a month before, with the RSVP date falling at least 2 weeks before. That will give everyone enough time to make arrangements (concerning work, childcare, other plans, etc), and will give you time to figure out how many people are coming (call the people who don't RSVP to find out what's up- they may be planning to show and just forgot to mail their card back), and give the final head count to the caterer, or have a final count for yourself, so you can buy the food, or make sure there's enough seating or parking.

You need to give people time to get the day off work, or time to buy a plane ticket if coming from out of town. Or heck even drive in. So, I would send them about a month or month and a half in advance. That's what my friend did with hers, and she had an excellent turn out. And, don't forget to put an RSVP phone number or email address so you can have an accurate head count.

You need to send out the invitations at least 6-8 weeks ahead of time.
People need time to make plans and not just a week or two in advance.
