PhotoShop is not designed to back up your photos.

Here's what I do:

1. Open the original image you want to edit in PhotoShop.

2. Immediately save the file as a photoshop .psd file

3. Now the original is safe and you are working on a copy that has all the options in PhotoShop available since it has been saved in the native format.

Your original is your back up in this way. If It is a really valuable image, copy the original (and edited file if you want) to a CD and store in a safe place.
