I have a 2 year old Bull Mastiff and she is always rubbing/chewing herself. The main problem area is her rump/top of her tail. It has like a dry scaley look to the area but she soon turns that into a red inflamed look buy chewing/rubbing. She doesnt have fleas I have taken her to the vets and they say its like a form of excema/dermatitis. They gave me a shampoo to wash her but it has such a potent chemical smell to it I have used it but it didnt work. So im wanting to see if anyone had some natural remedy ideas I could try to help relieve her discomfort. Any ideas/segestions would be much appriciated.

You should shave the area around her tail. Get down to the nitty gritty. You didn't mention if she only does this in the summer or all year. If this is a form of excema or another form of a skin problem, and I believe it could be, please listen to your vet. Sometimes taking care of an animal is smelly, yukky, time consuming and very costly. I use alot of natural products on my animals but if they are in dire need as I think your dog is, you sometimes need to get a big boost of meds going. Natural remedies take more time and once her skin is under control you can go that way. But if you love her as I know you do, you will do what needs to be done. Including going without sleep to make sure she is comfortable. Good luck

Are you sure it's not fleas? Fleas love the top of the tail/butt area of dogs. Even one flea bite to a sensitive dog can cause severe itching. I'd use a good flea product like Advantix or Frontline every month just in case. The medicated shampoo has to sit on he skin for 10 minutes in order to work. Rinse well. Use it twice a week. Give her Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in the form of fish oil capsules. They make the skin supple and the coat shiny. They are also anti-inflammatory. Your vet can also give you a cortisone spray for itching, as well as antihistamines.

I have 2 bullmastiffs my female started itching very young and we did a skin scrape, it turned out it was demodex mange. From my knowledge it usually targets the front quarters so this could be sarcoptic mange, it is contageous and should be discussed with a vet. It could also be food allergies, Bullmastiffs are prone to them and I combatted this by feeding part kibble and part raw food. Make sure that you are feeding a good quality food to begin with and if not, try Eagle pack, they have great foods for dogs with sensitive skin.
Oh I almost forgot, have the anal glands expressed, sometimes if they are full, it irritates the dogs behind and they bite and lick themsleves terribly

thy supplementing her diet with fish oil. It has helped my itchy Great Danes. I just mix it with their food. It is stinky at meal time but they like it and it helps their skin and coats.
