I do not and will not work over 40 hrs because I'm only paid for 40 hrs. On the contrary, my hubby works about 60hrs a week while he is on salary for 40. Would you do it? I hate it because it takes away from time with the kids and family in general. Any thoughts? Would you do it?

IF it is NOT normal for others in his profession or position to work this much then he probably has too much responsibility and workload and should consult his boss about it

otherwise tell him to wait until his next review and then request a raise based on his number of hours of work

It depends on the job. If you are a professional, you are paid to do a job, not just to work a certain number of hours. That's one reason why your pay is relatively high, not minimum wage or $11 an hour.

After college, I worked as a professional, then in management, and in none of these was I paid overtime although in all but one of the jobs, I averaged over the standard 40 hours a week. I also made good money for these jobs, so never felt cheated.

But if 60 hours a week is standard for your husband, that does seem excessive.

Well if a person can get the job done in 40 hours then they should. If they spend time goofing off during the work day on the internet, chatting on the phone or reading the paper, then they should stay until they complete their task. You need to ask your spouse, why he would rather be AT work than at home.... And some days I work 12 hours others 4 so I think it all balances out...

Your husband might not have a choice. Many places of employment that pay people a salary expect that the work be done no matter how long it takes.

I work a salaried position just like your husband. If I didn't put in the extra hours (and many people don't), I would not be where I am today. It's definitely a balance and hard when someone has a family. He just may not have a choice in the matter.

I am not paid to work 40 hours. I am paid a slary to do my job. Some weeks I do it in less than 40, some weeks much more.

I am a salaried professional, not an hourly clock-puncher.

Corporations have convinced us that we have to give them our services for free in order to "get ahead". They will continue to take advantage of that as long as we let them.
