It's the name. After they know the name, they don't want to know anymore.
From what I've read from the Satanic Bible and The Satanic Witch, it's a disturbing religion, in my opinion. Tells you to destroy people...

The Anton Levey (sp) following don't believe in any god, they think that man is the highest power, and that some few souls can reach their true potential. Where as not a satanist I do agree with some of his views. Like women's fashion, showing less can be more alluring than having everything out for everyone to see. Sometimes it's what may be underneath that counts. Whether or not his religion is b.s. or real isn't a judgment call for me to make.
Also people believe that satanists worship the devil because of punks pretending to be something they aren't. Worshiping demons is completely different.

It depends on the satanist. In some forms of LaVeyan satanism, they DO actually worship the devil. I read the LaVey satanic bible, and I was APPALLED by what I read in it. The rituals...the beliefs...it was all so perverted and wrong. I read the entire thing from cover to cover, and I thought it was the most horrible thing I've ever read. And no, I wasn't a Christian at the time, I was an atheist.
However, some forms of satanism are actually the same as atheism, only CONSIDERABLY more selfish. They don't believe in God, satan, or any of that stuff, but they DO believe in self-gratification. I would say that most atheists are better than that.

OK first of all why do you say that they don't believe in anything? obviously they believe in something to be worshiping the devil. you know they say there is no such thing as a dumb question, well this one is. and some of the time you even hear about satanists/occultists kidnapping/killing others and using them in their rituals. that is why if you may "some people think they worship satan"

In all the major monotheist religions those outside that faith are demonized. To a fundie monotheist ANYONE from a different faith is a worshiper of devils.
As Satanists we are not singled out as devil worships - many other groups also get labeled as such - pagans, wiccans, druids, goths, RPGers, etc.
