I majored in technical theatre and worked a couple of summers as a stage carpenter and stagehand. If I had stuck with carpentry I could have worked up to a decent paying job, and if I could have made it into a union shop I would have made good money. If you can get an MFA in tech theatre the market for tech directors in colleges or small theatres is decent.
I don't know much about acting work. I've heard it's a good major for law school. I've also heard that if you're over 40 the competition for stage parts thins out dramatically, so it's better as a second career. Movie extras start at $7/hour where I live, but if you have experience you'd have a good chance of being a featured extra or something and making $11/hour, and of course there are lots of low-paid speaking parts in low-budget movies, and good money in commercials.
