I had braces but didn't get them 'til I was an adult and there is some pain, however nothing major. Keep in mind that there will be some pain after every tightening which is done periodically to straighten teeth.

It is different for each person, for instance I have a high threshold for pain, so when I had mine I would either deal with the pain for a day/two or take Tylenol. Your teeth may hurt after a tightening, so eat something soft like soup.

Foods to stay away from: gum, ice, limit food with sauces (because of staining) and restrict any other food your orthod. may tell you to keep away from. Have your teeth cleaned every 3 to 6 months by your general dentist because it's hard to get food from in-between teeth with just your daily brushing. Also you'll want to brush before going to bed if you're not already in habit of doing so.

One thing I can say is I don't regret having them. It was worth it because people compliment me all the time on my smile. It's been about seven yrs. since they were removed. Plus my old orthodontist thinks my teeth still look great.

Good Luck

Well the brackets will feel weird when you first get your braces put on because your gums won't be used to having something rubbing against it. They might be scraping your gums a little, so be sure to use wax to put on them. (ask your orthodontist for some) Well... braces can be pretty painful when you first get them on, but they aren't bad after that. The only other time it hurts is when you get a new wire and maybe your first tightening or two. Hope this helps!

Trust me, getting braces is NOTHING like breaking a bone. It doesn't hurt at all.

During the whole procedure, I had to keep my mouth open the whole time, and I couldn't swallow. Other than that, it doesn't hurt. However, depending on the procedure your dentist does to get the braces on your teeth matters quite a bit. My dentists used a laser thing that glued the braces on with ultra blue light. It was NIFTY.

ahhah.

But for a few days, you might feel some discomfort. Your teeth may feel soooooooooooooooooo terrible that you want to rip them out. I suggest you take an Ibuprofen twice a day to help ease the pain. Eat some soft foods, such as:

Applesauce
Bread [Sandwich bread. NOT hard bread]
Noodle Soup [Ramen's is always yummy!]
Grapes
Bananas
Jello
ICECREAM.

ect...

Good luck with your braces!

Uh mannnnn braces <_<
I have had mine for about... 3 months now.
When you first get them on they don't hurt at all. But later on in the day you will start to feel it
The pain you will feel is pretty bad. (i am kinda sensitive to pain)
You can't eat too much, you won't want to anyways. Basically for a little over a week you are going to be very uncomfortable with your braces. After around a few weeks though all pain will be non-existant and your braces, you won't even notice they are there.
Although an annoying side effect of braces is it impairs your speech kinda :/
Also, deffinately get some wax to put on your braces! Your mouth is going to get pretty cut up on the inside from the braces, and the wax minimizes the abrasion

I would suggest stocking up on the pudding, yogurt, and applesauce
I am not going to lie, the first week is not pleasant!
But at least braces will make you even more good looking ;]

it depends what you are getting on.
I got my tops on first, and those didn't bother me at all. I think I had pain eating popcorn, but you aren't supposed to do that.
A couple months later I got my bottoms and those really hurt!
So if you are getting bottoms or both there will be some pain. I can't say it is comparable to breaking a bone because I've never actually broken a bone. Also, I'm really sensitive so for me the pain is worse than for other people. I can't even drink water without pain, but that's really unique. Good luck with them on!

I thought they hurt like crazy and I have broken both bones in one of my arms. It was a different kind of hurt, but it still hurt. My ortho always advised taking a painkiller 1/2 hour before the visit.

well when you get braces the whole point is to break the bone in your teeth and gums to striaghten it out. so yes it will hurt..for a while too..for me it hurt for about 2 weeks..at first the pain was really bad, but it draws down, yet still there, and they will just constiantly be painful. you have to give up on trying to eat apples and pairs, you can cut them up..but you can't eat them whole. advil/tylenol will be your best friend, but just remind yourself it is worth it in the end.you will have beautiful pearly whites!

when you get them, it won't hurt for a few hours, then it'll start. the pain will stay for about a week maybe. you can't eat anything hard or sticky. after that, it's not too bad unless you hit them on something of course, and after you get things changed it usually hurts for a day or 2

OMG IT HURTS! I got mine about two months ago and just got them tightened for the first time today and it hurts! plus they gave me rubber bands and those make it hurt. It took me about a weeks or two to sorta get used to my braces ,but once you get used to them there just as if you've had them all your life (until you get them tightened). My advice when you get them take LOTS of Tylenol or some other pain killer.
