I have been very very stressed lately, and have been having a lot on my mind. I can't sleep because this stress keeps me up, and I can't seem to get my nerves to calm down. I already am very tired, but can't sleep. What can I do to be able to sleep sooner, relive the stress, and calm my nerves down?

Breathe.

Deeply and through the nose. Relax all muscles in your body and do it as if you were going through a check list. Legs? Arns? Back? Butt? Face? The whole package.

Listen to the sound of your breath as you would the waves hitting a beach.

The step people miss when relaxing is that the breath feeds the fuel that feeds the mind. In yoga it's called prana. Imangine you are controlling the flow of gas to a gas engine.
Control the gas (the prana) by controlling your breathing. This is how you control your mind.

Left to its own devices; the mind can spin out of control and drive you batty. Take control of the situation.
Breathe!

Are you taking any sore of prescription medication daily or do you drink alcohol? Many RRx's whether for physical or psychiatric conditions , can cause difficulty sleeping. So can depression, substance abuse, quitting substance or alcohol use. First , I wwould seeif these or any thing else is causing your insomnia and fix the cause. If nothing new is happening, you aren'tsuffering from an anxiety disorder, and just can't sleep, here is what helps me I used to lie awake worrying , reviewing the past day ,fafeelingpset by things I forgot, or people I might have hurt, things I did wrong, feeling anger, humiliation , and worthlessness. Then I would go over the next day, making up different scenarios in my head, and getting upset by my own thoughts. I fFinally made up a sort of poem and forced myself to repeat it and meditate it whenever worrisome thoughts came something like "its time to sleep. yesterday is done, tommorow not begun Its time to sleep. worrying cannt change yesterday, Tomorrow isn't even guaranteed now is all I can change Its time to sleep." Also, I find having a big bowl of ceral with milk at bed really knocks me out-the carbs make you sleepy, and milk has an ammino acid that causes mild drowsiness, Herbal med, called Valerian Root, will work as well as any prescription sleping pill, so does Benadryl, but ask your dr first, and use pills a sa very last resort, because you can becom dependent on them and end up worse than before. Good Luck!

Eventually you will find what works for you. Sometimes I go on the couch and read until I am too tired and keep the television on until I fall asleep. Other times I put on my headphones and listen to something soothing. And other times I may pray.

And other times I force myself to think about something else. Some are pretty screwy like I am a major league baseball player, another is that I am getting dressed for the coldest weather possible, and sometimes I try to think of as many episodes possible of my favorite shows (the latter sometimes backfires if I get frustrated).

I usually go to bed at midnight. I am a professor and last semester made a rule that I would not check e-mails after 9:00 at night. Because on occasion you get an e-mail from a student or boss that gets you fired up and then I would be fuming about my reply and couldn't sleep. I held myself to the 9:00 rule and it helped tremendously. Think of what is causing you stress (job, family, relationship) and maybe think of a rule that is similar.

I hope you find something that works for you and am confident you will!

Sometimes readin helps me to drift off into a different place and not worry about what i am stressed about. if you're not into reading watch a show or movie you can get into and leave it all behind. Meditation can also help to calm you down, and if you're religious prayer can be good too. A warm bath always helps me unwind, and if none of that works talk to someone you trust about wahts stressing you out and maybe they can help you to calm down enough to sleep.
