I'm not sure if they do anymore but Exxon Mobile has indeed payed a lot of money to scientists in the past. Actually there is very few of the well known skeptics who hasn't been payed or been working in organizations funded by Exxon Mobile.

Here's a very interesting article comparing the current global warming debate with the tobacco industry disinformation campaign:

http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science/exxonmobil-smoke-mirrors-hot.html

There is also a website called exxonsecrets where you can make a search for "your" scientist and see if he/she is connected with Exxon Mobile: http://exxonsecrets.org/

Global warming/climate change has just become a new religious cult based in greedy power grabbing and hopes of world domination through "climate legislation". In the past it was the religious zealots who burned the truth telling scientists at the stake today it is climate change political zealots trying to silence the truth tellers and sell the world some very expensive SNAKE OIL. It seems global warming advocates are determined to turn logic and biology upside down. Anyone who remebers basic high school biology knows carbon dioxide is essential to plant life as oxygen is essential to human life. These two basic facts can't be separated. Only Obama-style liberals will attempt to convince us about how critical combating global warming is to the Earth's survival. As then Sen. Hillary Clinton said to Gen. David Petreaus, we must be "...willing to suspend all disbelief." I'm not willing to do so! Global warming, or climate change, which ever they decide to call it this year, is not based on science at all. it's all based on the consensus of a few scientist who have something to gain by furthering this farce. Guess what that is? $$$$ Anyone who believes Carbon Dioxide is a pollutant should stop breathing. Since we exhale Carbon Dioxide in every breath, we are literally polluting the atmosphere. So stop breathing and reduce your carbon footprint, or say NO to cap and trade & the whole global warming hoax. We can't project an accurate forecast a week in advance and yet we say that we're doomed in the future? I believe in eliminating waste and keeping things clean so that I, and my family, can safely enjoy the outdoors but I also know where the comforts of life come from and that is manufacturing that uses energy and supplies that are either grown or mined somehow. Follow the research grants and see what is being pushed. I have a simple question I would like someone to answer for me, If the specific gravity (relative density) of air is 1.00 and the specific gravity (relative density) of CO2 is 1.5189, that means CO2 is heavier than air and settles on the Earth's surface where green plants need it. How then can CO2 be in the Earth's upper atmosphere and stratosphere trapping the Sun's rays and heating up the planet? Anybody? Anybody? Hello? That's what I thought.

Yes. Here's two examples:

1) Last year the Royal Society (UK)--perhaps the the worlds most prestigious scientific society--documented that Exxon/Mobil had spent up to $39 million per year disseminating false information (including paying "scientists" to publish fake claims against global warming and/or its human causes).

2) The White House put an oil company lawyer on staff--and (as both media and Congressional investigation has proved) his job was to censor scientific reports that concluded global warming was real. Following exposure of tis unethical activity, he left the White House staff and is now an oil company "consultant" and lobbyist.

Here is one of the most important climatologists of the 21st Century telling us what is happening in the science of Climatology:

http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008220

Look into these oil companies and energy conglomerates:

British Petroleum (BP), Royal Dutch Shell (Shell), Sunoco, Con Edison, Sun Edison, General Electric, Duke Energy, and Alcan.

You may learn a lot more about the profiteering behind global warming.

Also do some research on DuPont.

See who is behind such companies as Carbon Investments, Generation Investment Management etc and the Al Gore connection to the Carbon Trade Industry, Carbon Offset companies, and a carbon tax system.

You may realize that all this focus on Exxon/Mobil is quite silly when there are bigger corporate interests that want us to believe in Global warming.

Pollution is a problem. The environment is an important topic. But instead of harmful pollution being controlled, companies will now be given a free pass to pollute more than ever before? Why, something as natural as CO2 has become the substitute villain.

Something as natural as CO2 is the focus of an emerging industry. Tremendous money is going into controlling this bogeyman instead of the real environmental problems and the problem of world poverty.

Please do your own research and then respond to what I'm saying. There is more money and corporate lobbyists on the side of Global Warming. That is why the media is saturated with Global warming alarmism. Follow where the money is being spent and by who.

We who try to bring up these facts are being labeled conspiracy theorists in an effort to discredit information from going out to the public. Please look at all sides of the issue.

No, GW do exist, but evidences point at something that cause it, and that is not ALL related to Human activities and CO2 emissions! Oil companies don`t really care about this thing, as many other countries are developing and the needs for oil increase in those, so they got more customers, even with a background of GW!! So all in all, they make even more money out of it in some ways! Also, I believed that the GW became politicized to allow the first global tax to take place, it is called the Carbon tax! Which is a way to keep developing countries in check, as to avoid them overpassing us in development and wealth! Anyways, its all politics, and little about our environment! Look at my blogs to read some materials I did found about this thing! They are far more important events to check than only GW... The next few years are gonna be rock and roll...

Everyone's got their hand in someone's pocket, deniers and supporters alike. That's why the whole global warming issue has gotten so ridiculous.

I believe they do. Just like the tobacco industry paid for those so called studies saying that smoking was not that harmful. Unfortunately, $$$ can buy just about anything. We the American people just have to be smarter than the big corporate executives that are trying to pad their wallets. Enough is Enough!!!!

No. Can you name one scientist who denies global warming?

Many good scientists are being intimidated by accusations from political activists. One example of this comes from a public blog entry by Astrophysicist, Nir Shaviv, “Anyway, if you "smell oil", perhaps it is because we were told too many times that if someone is against anthropogenic GHG he is 'one of them, one of the bad guys'. The climate community turned many of us into paranoids. You smell oil everywhere even where there is no drop of it. The difference between us, though, is that my research led me to change my preconceptions, so I am not gullible to the propaganda I hear (and I admit I used to be before stumbling into the field).”

It's possible, but I doubt it's all that common. There are several lobbyist groups who are every probably "inspired" by funding from big oil, but most of the actual climate scientists who do not accept the theory are legitimate. However, there aren't many of them around anymore, especially since the release of the 4th IPCC report.
