1941. Called Barborssa. Because it came after World War 1. More died in WW2 but the trench warfare of WW1 especially with the posion gas was almost as bad if not worse. Ever sucked in some mustard gas?

the German attack on the Motherland came on Sunday June 22nd 1941. To the Germans it was known as 'Operation Barbarossa'. In the Motherland it was 'velikayya otechestva voyna' or 'Great Patriotic War' It was never called ww2 in the Soviet Union. Nearly 21, 000, 000 Soviet citizens died as a result of this war, you are correct it was most destructive ever which is why many Russians get a little upset when USA film studios bring out movies suggesting they won war single handedly.

Which attack on Russia - there was more than one.
It is called World War Two, because it was the second world war (after WW1, 1914 -1918). We do not order wars by the number of people who died, but in the chronological order (as in the one that happened first is number one, the one that happened next is number two etc.). In the name, the number of people who died does not matter.
