An iso image is an file that contains the image of all the data on a CD. I personally like to use iso images to duplicate CDs.
For example, if you have a MSDN subscription, Microsoft lets you download iso image of software. You can use the iso images to create disks just like they would be if you purchased them. The OS disks are even bootable.
Another thing I like about iso images is you can download free tools that let you simulate CD/DVD drives, and you can mount those virtual drives with iso images, which makes your computer think that you just put an actual CD in your computer.
