The type of service you wish to join depends on what you want to do and what you expect to get out of it. If you do join the Coast Guard be sure to look at all of the rates you can choose from in order to get an idea of what's available and see if you can't talk with someone already in who is currently in the job. Promotions depend on the needs of the service, like all branches, and which rates are needed more at the time. For instance, some people can make E-6 in six years because of the rate that they chose and what was needed by the CG. Talk to the recruiter in you area, but remember to also talk with service members who are already in to get a complete view of the service.

But you have to be over six feet tall!
Sorry, that's old joke. But the Coast Guard is a good service.

Sure- if you want a branch that does more of homeland security then overseas service. If you like the water, too... The downside to CG is promotion takes a long time... But hey- you almost always get stationed in a nice waterfront community. So it depends on your priorities.

It is a good choice. You may not find rapid promotions, but it is a sensible alternative, for anyone interested in military service.
