Tyler, yes it is illegal in all states except New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

It's up to the officer. You can go to jail, but it is more likely you will get a ticket as long as you have a DL. They can tow your car as well, though. It is a pretty expensive ticket depending on where you got it. Also, it can raise your insurance rates when you actually do go to get insurance, and the state can suspend your license or require you to get an sr22 to prove you have ins in the future. An sr22 is when your ins company agrees to send a notice directly to the state if your ins ever cancels. Then they definitely will suspend your license. Some ins companies charge extra for the sr22. I worked for an insurance company. I promise, they will do it.

Here's the site for the minimum req by state:

Well in California if you do not have insurance when you get pulled over, the cop can have your car towed away and leave you walking. If you have a warrant out or if you were doing something that is against the law when he pulled you over of course then he can arrest you. But walking and taking your car from your possession is usually enough punishment if that is the only violation other than something minor that caused him to pull you over in the first place.

You can, it is against the law. I just got stopped because my light over my license was out and I have no insurance, long story short I don't earn enough money to pay for insurance, so got to drive without and hold my butt cheeks together praying that I don't get stopped.

But, back to getting stopped, I was wearing my work ID and had a sad look on my face when the officer approached me (and I am a blonde) and he did not ticket me, thank you Lord! He mentioned that his wife worked for Good Sam hospital, too, he thought that's where I worked and I just smiled and said that's good I'll have to look her up, and told him I was working 3 jobs to try to buy insurance, he felt for my predicament and was a really nice guy. But he could have and even arrested me if I had been stopped before for the same offense. Phew, am I lucky.

Depends on your record. You would certainly be cited, and made to present proof of insurance in court. Your license could be suspended till your provide that information. If you continued to drive without insurance in the interim and you were caught again, who could blame the cop for arresting you?

In Georgia (where I used to live), driving without insurance is an automatic trip to jail and a license suspension.

It would end up costing you a whole lot more than just paying your insurance on time.

No but you will be cited and have to appear in court to plea your case. If you don't have insurance don't drive until you obtain it. If you are in an accident and you are found neglegent and don't have insurance your livelyhood will be deminished to nothing emotionally as well as financially. If there is a death involved you will go to jail for a very long long time.

No I don't have insurance either I simply cannot afford it I got a ticket and they let me keep driving in Texas. Even the cop understood it is not affordable sometimes. He understood but still did his job and gave me a ticket now I have to do that I guess I won't eat now. Thats all.

In my state you can be arrested. Usually the police impound your car and the expense of tow and holding goes to you as well as the ticket fine which is pretty hefty here. Trust me, get insurance. It will save you money in the long run.
