Depends on the size of the room you're dance is in. Generally a pair of twelves on some stands will work well and you should be able to run it through a laptop. Peavey makes good equipment that works with pretty much any system you might want.
Don't let anyone tell you you'll regret having your friend do your music. My friend and my daughter both did it that way and everyone had fun and you get all the music you like.

Having a DJ or live music is going to make the flow so much better; the DJ can actually gauge the mood a lot better than just letting an IPOD run. Unfortunately this is one of the last things people look at booking, but when people talk about your wedding the thing they will remember the most is the reception because that is were everyone interacts. I really suggest hiring a professional for your entertainment needs. Watch for flat rate specials at wedding fairs that include unlimited time and all kinds of extras, this is how we booked ours and we saw a demo of the show. I have been to weddings with bad DJs and bad entertainment, even one with an IPOD show. It was horrible and no one seemed to have a really good time, to say the least a party that was supposed to go until midnight lasted until 10:30. We are getting married in September and I know people are going to have a great time. The place where it is not so smart to spend the extra money is for example on those personalized napkins that just get destroyed anyways. And programs for the ceremony, you will save a lot if you print them yourself; they don't have to be extravagant. This will probably save you enough to at least cover half of the cost of the DJ. And don't be afraid to negotiate and shop around for the best value, not necessarily the best price. It will make all the difference.

I promise you, it is worth it to get a professional DJ. They serve as your emcee as well as providing a wide variety of music. They know timing, can handle unexpected circumstances, and will keep the evening flowing. A great DJ is worth their weight in gold.

You might think you will be saving money, but the price you pay at your reception with problems and not being able to solve them with your friend as a professional are not worth it.

For your own sake, reconsider.

Best Wishes!

if the venue has speakers you can just use an fm transmitter and pump the music thru the speakers via radio...
if not you will have to get a speaker system and a radio or a way to transmit the music ... like a system that you can plug in to your ipod and in to the system
