One of the most common myths is that we only use a small percentage of our brains. Nothing could be further from the truth. We use the majority of our brain everyday and even while we sleep. The idea that we only use a small portion of our brain power comes from an advertising campaign during the 60's for a tv company. Yup well done advertising, it worked. (As did the myth of fish having a 3 second memory in order to sell more fishtanks.) So we evolved to use all of our brain to survive, adapt and develop into the being we are today.
Question? If you asked Stephen Dawking what answer were you expecting? Stephen Hawking is a famous Physicist and extremely intelligent and Richard Dawking is the famous Atheist. I think an Oh Dear is in order.
Another Religious Imbecile is put to the sword. Hurrah!!!!!

1) Who's Stephen Dawking? The nephew of Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins?
2) Why are you asking this on the religious section, and not the biology section?
3) Are you falling for the assumption that if you can disprove evolution, then you've proven creationism? Because that's simply not true.
4) The "only 1%" story is a myth.
5) If anything, your argument sounds like a good argument against CREATIONISM. Why would a creator make such a brain only to not have it used?
6) You're obviously cluessless about how evolution works. If you knew the basics, you'd know why your reasoning is wrong.

thats an easy one to answer, look around you, I assume you're in a house with cooling/heating at hand, with access to transport and food easily enough. All that was done with people designing, building, manufacturing, governing etc. All use their brains, without advanced thinking we'd still be at the mercy of the elements and predators (so its a pretty good survival trait).
Also going back to stone age times, the more intelligent the person the greater survival chances, they bred more successfully and here we are.
As for how much of our brain gets used, they're still figuring that out as far as I know, sections with new uses are being discovered all the time.

What "top scientists" said the human brain "never even gets used by as much as 1% of its potential"?
And who is Stephen Dawking? One of the voices in your head?

You destroy your own credibility at the start. The ten percent myth has long since been debunked and even a casual web search should have established that!
Almost everything about our body, whilst amazing, is sub optimal, and makes perfect sense as the result of evolutionary adaptation, but none at all as a result of 'intelligent design'!
Who the frappling zarkuarks is Stephen Dawking?

That question is all over the place and doesn't even make sense. I think you're saying, "because the brain is so advanced, not just any god, but the one you believe in, was involved in it's creation." That's a pretty big jump in conclusions. That's like saying, "The sky is blue, so god must have lots of blue crayons".
Evolution is a theory based on real observed evidence. You're better off asking an Atheist to prove that a god wasn't involved in the big bang. He can't. But that's not a win for you either, as you can't prove it either.
The goal is for both sides to stop claiming to know things without proof, and consider agnosticism. :P

OK. The brain is only used to 1% of its capacity. 1% of its capacity for knowledge, for holding information etc. However, if you had a stroke, it could wipe out a hell of a lot more than 1% of your brain. A stroke knocks out movement of a leg, an arm, fingers, hands, memory, speech, muscles in your face etc. The brain is used constantly, by your body, it has evolved, it has expanded. We walk on our 'hind' legs upright, we communicate in sophisticated languages, because our brains evolved.
As a creationist, your question could also be reversed. If you were created by a God, why did he/she/it, give you something that you would never be used to its potential. Why would 'God' give Adam and Eve a brain, when he/she/it would have known that 'man' would be inquisitive about his/her surroundings.
Why did he not create robots, that would follow his commandment - don't eat the fruit.
By the way, you don't have to be atheist to believe in evolution.
There is a hymn, "God has given us a book full of stories
It was written by His children of old.
It begins with the tale of a garden,
And it ends with a city of gold." and thats just what they are stories/tales. You have to realise that they were written for people thousands of years ago, still evolving and trying to understand the world they lived in. So 'Elders' made up stories, that were simplistic. Theres the key, simple stories for simple people.

The person who told you that we use only 1% was probably talking about himself. Any scanner will show you that the brain activity is registered in the whole brain.
Could you also tell me if you believe we popped up from a piece of earth ready for use, no assembly required, and perfect, why we would be using only 1% of our brain? Shouldn't we be made with a smaller brain to stop this waste?

The effects of evolution can be observed. How can a sensible, otherwise rational, human being believe in fairytales like creation.
Does the book of genesis mention dinosaurs? Did Noah take 2 kangaroos into the ark? 2 koalas? 2 duck-billed platypuses?

It is actually a myth that we only use 10% of our brain (that is the common phrase). We actually use much more than that, but don't completely understand exactly how it works. I hope that isn't the only reason you don't think evolution is a good theory. Just because the theory isn't complete and can't explain everything yet doesnt mean it isn't true. It is by far the best theory we have.
