im a huge sr fan, and i will definitely say the sport is suffering without him, its just not the same.
but the king is the king, the silver fox was legendary, and dw, bill elliot, neil bonnet, alan kulwicki, the allisons, all those guys were great, today its more about money than competition.
but no one was better at taking a 10th place car and beating and banging his way to the front than big E.

On my personal list of best drivers David Pearson is #1 and Dale Sr is #2. I put The King in 4th, right after Jeff Gordon. Let me put it to you like this, is Barry Bonds the greatest baseball player just because he has hit the most homeruns in the history of the game? Most people would say not and his legacy will be the whole steroid scandal. Much the same, Richard Petty's career has to be looked at in context and how he got many of his wins. I also factor that in with Sr. and the fact that he often times moved people out of the way instead of figuring out how to set them up for a clean pass. I'm not saying the Silver Fox never spun somebody but he didn't rely on that for the most part. He won on every type of track and always got the best finish he could regardless of how his car was handling. He has a higher winning percentage than Petty and Earnhardt and he was an extremely smart driver. When Richard was asked in an interview who the best driver he ever raced against was he said "David Pearson." David was told this in an interview and his response was "I would have to agree with Richard." Too funny!

This is really a hard question to answer. Both were really good at what they did. But Richard Petty will always be King of NASCAR and Dale Sr. will always the the REBEL of NASCAR. Yes everybody did some mean things to win the race but doesn't everyone no matter what they do? People hate Jeff Gordon ( I don't ) but the guy is absolutely phenomenal in a car. He also credits Dale Sr. as his mentor. So the best answer is who do you think is the best?

In 1976 he had 18 Top 10's in those 22 races. Some top analysts claim that David Pearson was the greatest driver of all time. I am so glad I got to see him win Darlington back in 1976. He was truly awesome, but Richard Petty was no slouch either. Pearson would have been closer to Petty had he run full schedules all those years by winning more and winning some that Petty did win.

I say Dale Earnhart! He is and always will be the greatest NASCAR driver ever! Richard Petty is the King. But, Dale evolved right along with the sport! Let me see Dale has been gone for how many years and is still selling more stuff at his suviener trailers than some current drivers(like Kurt Busch). There is a line at his trailer when I go, I don't recall seeing a Richard Petty suviener trailer at any of the races since he left?

I'm going to have to agree with Jason. And its hard to compare. When they king won there was alot more races pre year and no near the parity there is nowdays. JG, whether you like it or not is a GREAT driver. ***** and moan all you want, it is a fact.

I've been a fan of JG since his first race as a rookie. I was told when I moved to NC to pick a driver, anyone but Earnhart and I did. JG. But ya know, whenever I watched Dale Sr, especially in his last couple of years I got such a huge kick out of that slick sideways smile and always rooted for him if Jeff was out of the race. I miss watching them race. And another point. He sure raised a class kid. Jr, never came on and was disrespectful of any other driver and when asked about JG, even though he was supposed to be "The closen one" to knock him off his throne, always said he was just glad to be racing against him. Class...sure wish it would have trickled down to his and his dads fans...

The King because of his 200 wins. Dale, Sr. because he showed other drivers that NASCAR was not only a sport, but a huge business opportunity.

Greater at what...Greater at winning, The King proved that with 200 wins. Greater at driving, Dale Earnhardt had a style no one could beat. How can you choose between them without qualifying the question. Both were GREAT.

That's a loaded question with no real "right" answer.

Based on pure driver talent.... Jeff Gordon

Petty won with sliimer talent fields and more races a year. Dale Sr. won through driving and beating his way up if he had to. Jeff has used the chrome horn before, but has more pure talent and finesse behind the wheel.
