I have been reading a little about Islam. I know nothing about it. I have found somethings disturbing. Can a knowledgeable Muslim please shed some light on these
"Apostasy in Islam is commonly defined as the rejection of Islam in word or deed by a person who has been a Muslim. All five major schools of Islamic jurisprudence agree that a sane male apostate must be executed. A female apostate may be put to death, according to some schools, or imprisoned, according to others."
"A non-Muslim who insults Islam must be put to death, according to most schools of Islamic jurisprudence, or flogged and imprisoned, according to others."
Is this actually true?

Google Abdul Rahman. If it hadn't been for an international outcry, this man would have been executed in Afghanistan last year, not by the taliban but by the new Afghan government for becoming a Christian.
This, on the other hand, might might help you:

No darling that is not true. You have to read the verses and the interpretation of the verses, some verses apply only for a specific time in history just like the bible, the bible mention es raping and killing children. But if you look at the interpretation of the bible you will see it was just about a cetain time. E mail me if you want ok honey
edit: *rolls eyes* at Goolie Julie don't listen to her she is a troll without a man.

Don't use wikipedia. Anyone can go on there and change things. Just try talking to a muslim person. They would be the best source.

Ive got a sneaking suspicion that you havent read much about Islam, or that you are reading biased websites. The first question I had about Islam was how a book that is supposed to be written for the entire world can "only be truly understood in its native Arabic." Allah wasnt thinking too clearly when he told Mohamed that one... Am I expected to learn a new language in order to be a "true" beleiver?
Instead, youve found two "evil" parts and are concentrating on them. I remind you that, when Christianity was in its infancy, killing anyone who spoke against it and killing non-Chrisitans was the norm. By the same token, should we be asking if stoning your children or beating your slaves is appropriate, as written in the Bible?

The word apostacy means to away, apart, from its greek root. In Cathothism a person who apostates is either tortured or excommunicated if you look at the old testement we have the following verse
Deuteronomy 13:6-10:
"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which [is] as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; [Namely], of the gods of the people which [are] round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the [one] end of the earth even unto the [other] end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage"
Its clear, "thou shalt surely kill him," that if he leaves the faith he is killed. This is common to Judasim and Christanity, is this something new?
Famously in christanity you have Julian the apostate and others many christans now have come to Islam.
It was the spanish inquesition that tortured and killed Jews and Muslim tring to force them into Christanity.
This did apply because it was seen as treachary of the Islamic rule, but no due to lack of a caplihate, this cannot be enforced anywhere in the world. The female apostate is not killed.
