I am African American female in America we are called “black people”. I am not racists towards any culture. I am just tired of America. I don’t want to move to Africa, I wanted to move to somewhere like Australia. Is Australians racists towards blacks as American are? I plan on moving in 2years after I finish school. Any advice is helpful.

Thanks for taking time out to answer my concerns !!!

In Australia we are more interested in your attitude towards us than what colour you are.
If you are a drunken, obnoxious, loud-mouth type of person no one will be very interested in being too friendly towards you.
Yes, unfortunately we do have people who have rascist attitudes here. Thankfully they are a small minority.
In the main if you have a friendly, accepting, open attitude to the people around you and a sense of humour, you'll get on with us just fine.

You asked for any helpful advice.
Well, number one is work hard at your studies and you'll have the opportunity to have a good job and comfortable life.
Secondly, find out as much as you can about Australia and the Australian way of life. Read our newspapers on-line, if there's things you don't understand google it or ask us here.

Here is the web address for Australian newspapers on line:
http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/australi.htm
There are newspapers listed from Capital city papers to small town papers. They should give you a good cross-section idea of our attitudes etc.

Good luck, I hope you get where you want to go in life.

In some of the smaller towns in Australia you will still find people who are racially intolerant unfortunately. And their intolerance will be against all non white cultures not just africans.

However cities like Melbourne and Sydney are quite culturally diverse and you will face very little discrimination in these places. Here it is very easy to make friends, get into school and get work provided you are a geniunely nice and hard working person. Provided you have the right attitude you will be fine.

Even in the communities where racism still exists you will find that you are discrimated against far less than you would be in America. People in certain places may think racists things about you or not want to be your friend, but violence and blatant discrimation are extremely rare.

Coming from the USA the only problem you may facing is getting a visa. As the US is not a Commonwealth Nation it will be hard for you to get a working visa here without arranging a job and sponsorship here first and the tourist visa is only around 3 months. Your best option is to enrol in university here and complete you degree and then try to get a skilled migrant visa. Check out the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website for your options: www.immi.gov.au

I believe that overall Australia is less racist than America. But then again, I am white in a country where that is still the dominant racial group, so perhaps I am naive in saying that. As others have pointed out, it's not perfect, and there are some people who have racist attitudes here, but not too many ... I hope!

My perception of the US is that many of the cities are divided by race, with almost everyone in each neighbourhood belonging to just one race. I don't think this is the case so often in Australia. These days, I think most neighbourhoods in Australian cities have people from a mix of different backgrounds.

What Australians are interested is behaviour and attitude, not whether you are from some particular ethic group. I know actual African people here, from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana etc and they seem to get on OK, holding down good jobs and in one case volunteering as a soccer coach. There are also many people from India and Sri Lanka here, some of whom are very dark. They seem to get on OK too.

We don't see many Afro-Americans here but we don't see many Americans or even Canadian residents in any case. There are a few I have known, but not many.

Aboriginal people have had, and still are having a tough time. But even then more than half of those that do identify as of aboriginal background are doing alright. There are big problems in reserve areas. Some of the people in these reserve areas are only one to three generations from first contact with Europeans. There is a real problem with cultural adaptation. which is made worse by the very remote location of some communities. It seems to involve about 5,000 people out of an Aboriginal population of at least 400,000.

Australians don't care where you come from as long as you treat others as you want to be treated and respect our laws and the way we live and don't always complain about how bad Australia is compare to your country (because if you do - why bother coming here in the first place?)

It is a similar question to what you are asking and there are more answers for you to consider.

EDIT: Ju and sonrosado_1 - Your answers showed that you KNOW NOTHING about Australia and probably have never been here at all and see what it's like for black people. Please refrain from giving out information you really have no idea about.

You will find racists and bigots anywhere but generally Australians are tolerant. Interestingly they are far more tolerant of black people from other countries than they are of their own. Our treatment of Aborigines has not been too good.

You won't find terms like "African American" in Australia, we generally don't find it necessary to label someone like that. We will speak of people's origins but we seldom qualify "Australian". You might be of Vietnamese, Lebanese, Greek, South African or English ancestry and your ancestry could come up in conversation but there are no Vietnamese-Australians or Lebanese-Australians, only Australians.

While I dislike much of what America does and the way our PM brown noses your President, I do not dislike Americans as individuals and I think you will find that to be a general atitude here.

As I said, there are racists in Australia, there are everywhere but you should find that people here accept you for who you are, not where you come from or what you look like.

I worked with an African American here in Australia for a while, and he brought his wife and children over and sent the children to one of the most expensive schools in the country because the US Govt paid for the fees. His wife and children felt that no-one would speak to them and blamed racism - I tend to think no-one would talk to them because they just weren't rich enough.

Apart from that, as other people have already answered, most people in Australia don't seem to worry about what you are, colour, race, religion, but rather want to know who you are as an individual.

everywhere you go in the world you find racist people.
here in Australia you'll will find some of the country areas are less tolerant then others, I grew in in the country so I know.
our cities are very multicultural so really you won't have a problem.
I found the most tolerant place is the gold coast QLD. mixed race couples are really common and no one even takes a second look. if your a nice person you'll make loads of friends and love living here, regardless of your race.
