You just experienced one of the many "tools" in the arsenal, of entrapment of the Mormon web. Let the same also, be said for the young women which go out into the world in missionary service.
When the young men / women look clean cut neatly dressed and polite they are projecting an image. If they came with rolled up sleeves and tatoos who would wish to associate with them. An attractive missionary will get greater response because, families are looking for that "home spun look" the innocense of by gone ages.
After all remember "you catch more flies with sugar the vinegar".

You should totally help him break away from his oppressive religion... one gentle touch at a time...
Thing is... if it doesn't take, he can always just chalk it up to "sin" and say "oh well, I'm only human."
The only Mormons who don't get that "get out of hell free" card are the ones who are born gay... they get jail and shock therapy!
