Neither is really "popular". Its just the subway is much cheaper... although.. when you have a day like today (8-8-07), you wish you could take a cab. I hate the subway cause its always hot and people are always pushing to get on the car, but like i said, it is much cheaper than taking a cab!

ok, taxis cost alot more than subways or buses. there are pros and cons to both mass transit and cars (taxis).

subways and buses don't necessarily all run 24/7. there is probably SOME service to most places, but, as i said, there isn't such thing as total coverage 24/7. both subways and buses are less expensive, and can be very convenient IF you learn the system. trains are color-coded, and divided into 3 main lines, the irt, the ind and the bmt (historically, these were competing companies, which merged a long time ago, into what became the mta (metropolitan transit authority). the maps are pretty easy to read, and i would suggest that you take the opportunity to access them online, to get some idea of the areas of coverage. there are metrocards, which allow flexibility of use, and even some fairly significant savings.
however, they run pretty automatically (meaning, no-one will hold the doors, if you are trying to catch the train, in fact it's against the law to do that. if the doors are closing, let them, and catch the next train., and if you need instructions or assistance, you need to speak with the conductor, not the motorman, the conductor is in the middle of the train, and, you can generally know where his car will be, if you look overhead for the little board, with diagonal stripes (the indicator board) - the train will stop in such a way, that his car will stop there.) until you know the system, allow extra time, since it is possible to miss a stop, especially in rush hour, when everyone is in a mad rush, and really no-one will have time to take you by the hand. the exits get crowded, and it's easy to be intimidated into not pushing through the crowd, to get out the door. do NOT take luggage or large packages on the subway during or near rush hours, it'll be harder for you, and you will annoy everyone around you, and you won't elicit any sumpathy, if you need any assistance.

cabs are more expensive, and sometimes hard to find, depending on the neighborhood. however, if you have luggage and/or large packages, they can be the way to go. however, you should try to have an idea (get a map) on the distances and routes, since not all cabbies are scrupulous, and some will rip you off by going way out of your way, to jack up the meter.

all in all, subways (and buses) are by far, the most popular mode of transportation in nyc.
good luck!!!

When i went to new york i saw alot of taxis but most of them were stuck in traffic and they can get pretty expensive. The subway is alot cheaper but it's not safe at night well or even sometimes during the day. If you're gonna be out during the morning time and early day time like 7am to 4pm then i say the subway is good because that's when it's filled with business people...but at night it's a diff story. The subway system is very confusing it was easy to get lost but some new yorkers are very friendly and helpful.

You need to know your way around NYC to take a subway. THey're cheaper and fast, but if you miss your stop,.....well, just saying.
Of course a taxi costs more.. We also have buses and, again, you need to know your way around. Bring lots of money. NYC is more crowded than Phoenix.

Subways serves millions of people of day ....it is the Arteries of this great city....Were you around for the MTA Strike??
There were no Subways or Buses and it was just complete chaos....traffic was impenetrable....

Taxi cabs are very useful and do serve their purpose in this city but not everyone can afford it on a continuous basis.

The subway is a whole lot cheaper and faster. The subway is 1 low price no matter how far you travel and there's no trafiic to contend with. The subway system is color coded and you can get a map online (http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/). I used to live on the subway.

On a typical weekday people take 4.9 million subway trips. Many of us take it twice a day, but still that's a LOT more than the ridership for cabs. Cabs mostly serve tourists, visiting businesspeople, drunk people, wealthy shoppers, and relatively wealthy people running late.
