They start off with questions like " is your name " is your address" just to get a pattern before they move on to the serious stuff. They might throw in a trick question like " have you ever done anything you are ashamed of " At least that is how they worked me.

Here's few possibilities. Remember, TELL THE TRUTH. even if you think they won't like your answer. There is no such answer as, "Yes, but ...". Simply YES or NO. Don't think too much about your answer, just decide if your answer is 'yes' or 'no'. They won't try to trick you, *but* they may ask the same question twice, but worded differently just to see if your answers are consistant. In no particular order of importance ....
- Have you ever stolen anything? (Say 'yes' because everyone has at least stolen a chocolate bar when they were a kid).
- Have you ever smoked marihuana?
- Have you smoked marihuana in the past 6 months?
- Have you used any other illegal drugs in the past 6 months?
- In your application you were asked to list any traffic violations you've received. Was your list complete?
- Does taking this test make you nervous?
- Are you personally aware if any of your close friends have a criminal record?
Relax, and remember not to think too long about your answers ... they won't be overly complicated. Good luck!

Just general questions about if you've done anything illegal in the past. I'll tell you this though, a polygraph isn't some magic thing that detects lies, it only detects the nervousness. An innocent person can fail the test if they're nervous and a criminal can lie their way through it if they don't react to things. The person administering the test should be watching you and your reactions rather than the readout if they're good at what they do.

The lie detector works by detecting subtle changes in the activity of your nervous system. So the first few questions they ask are designed to calibrate what your responses are to 'normal' questions - your name, address, etc. Then they'll interleave these questions with the kind of question that you would *have* to lie in order to answer correctly - like have you ever broken the speed limit, etc,
When they've got an idea of your range of responses they start to home in on questions that are germane to the serious subject that they're really interested in.
However, they're not 100% reliable, because you can think of what they're measuring as a kind of 'startle' reaction, and so if they touch on a subject that affects you emotionally they may also get an unfavourable reading. So also they're useful, they should never be relied on as the totality of the evidence.

Depends on the test you are taking. Lifestyle polygraphs are much more intense and will go into your personal preferences and activities. Most polygraphs are just standard things along the lines of have you done drugs, have you committed treason, etc etc.
Keep in mind polygraphs are just stress meters. That's it. They have no magic powers and even the U.K. doesn't use them because they are inaccurate. The polygraph--if it's government run--is an excuse to frighten you and try to get you talking. They may say you are failing even if you are not. There are plenty of resources available to tell you exactly what to expect based on the test you are taking...if you want to avail yourself is your choice.

What kind of questions do they ask when you are NOT taking a lie detector? It depends entirely on what the want to know. The machine is simply a tool. Using the machine or not using it has ZERO influence on the questions asked.

First they'll ask establishing questions to find out how you react when you tell the truth and when you lie. Then they ask you questions that pertain to the crime.
