And what do you think of what he has to say?

"Prominent Muslim scholar Dr. Youssef Al-Qaradawi has condemned Al-Qaeda for their fuel tanker suicide bombing of a centuries-old Jewish synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba in April 2002.

On June 23 in a statement broadcast on the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television channel., Sulaiman Abu Gaith, a spokesman for the Al-Qaeda network, claimed responsibility for the explosion that killed 14 German tourists. Five local Jews also perished.

Dr. Al Qaradawi said that in Islam it is not permissible to attack places of worship such as churches and synagogues or attack men of religion, even in a state of war.

“Civilians, such as the German tourists, should not be killed, or kept as hostages. Jews, not in conflict with Muslims, must not be killed either.

Anyone who commits these crimes is punishable by Islamic Sharia and have committed the sin of killing a soul which God has prohibited to kill and of spreading corruption on earth,” said Dr. Al Qaradawi.

When asked whether the killing of Jewish women, children and men is permissible, Islamic scholar Muhammad Al-Hanuti said that no one may be persecuted or tortured because of their religion.

The answer by Monica shows how little non muslims know about islam and sharia...let me tell u what sharia is.....sharia is the code of conduct assigned by ALLAH.in other words sharia is the other name of islam..as far as women's rights are concerned , dont judge islam on the actions of the muslims because most muslims dont practice islam fully, instead try to study islam and u'll find that Human rights is the biggest chapter in the islamic teachings.... and those who blame islam for violation of human rights dont know meaning of the term.. Western countries are killing thousands of people all around the globe and still claim for human rights.. they have stripped women of their clothes and regard that as liberalization....... u dont know anything about human rights.......in the west people throw their parents in old houses once they are old on the other hand islam teaches us to respect them and not even say a word in argument even if the parents are non muslims...go get your facts right because all you know is through media and media syas what it likes...........

He still supports sharia, though, and that's bad enough for those unfortunate enough to be born female.

He, like most religious people, is troubling in that when confronted with a moral/ethical question, he answers whether or not X is permissible in his religion rather than whether X is right or wrong.

This is a problem. As we see time and time again, other people interpret the religion in a violent way, so making the religion's commentary on an action the only determinant of whether an action should be done or not is problematic and often leads to immorality.

Bombing is wrong because it's wrong, not because Islam says one way or the other about it.

Edit (to Khan): "Sharia" is not another word for Islam. Even if it were, though, it would still be wrong. Look at what it says!

Your tired cliches, especially "you only know what the [presumably Jewish-controlled] media say," do not impress. How could I get my information from CNN when I don't even have cable? You assume too much.

Women not having to dress according to your standards *are* liberatred (and we're liberated for many other reasons, so your focusing on your pet favorite is troubling--note that Western women can also inherit fully, can drive cars, can walk in public without a male escort, aren't killed for "adultery," don't undergo circumcision, and can generally live life without being treated like children, which cannot be said about many women in sharia countries).

Our standards for caring for parents are different, but that does not make nursing homes a human rights abuse. Geez. Even those who do put their parents under the care of full time doctors generally care about them.

You can lecture me on human rights when women are equal in sharia countries, but I have a feeling that won't be for a long time.

He sounds like a fine humanitarian. It's good to see responsible Muslim clerics speaking out in such bold terms.
