It is accurate to say that a sommelier has been trained in the art/science? of food & wine pairing but it also follows that one need not be a sommelier to discover the many pleasures of wine at the dinner table. I know of many people who thru their love of wine and cooking have gained tremendous insights into the marriage of food & wine without any formal training.
I, or any other sommelier, can suggest wine pairings that are considered classic matches with a wide variety of cuisine. In reality, I think all we can really hope to do is steer you in the right direction and let you decide for yourself....you will always be the best judge of what you like. Like most things in life...practice makes perfect.

Sommelier, pronounced "so-molly-ay". There are also Master Sommeliers, but not many. They are wine experts primarily, but that they pair wine with food is a given, because it's invariably done in a dining setting.
