Personally I'm a fan of Andy Warhol. I went to an exhibit in Vancouver, BC and fell in love with his pop art.

Norman Rockwell and Georgia O'keefe are two of the most popular American artist. I'd probably have to go with Rockwell. Andy Warhol is quite popular as well, though his big thing is repetition and being able to reproduce the same image tons of times.

LeRoy Neiman by far. He is quickly becoming the next Norman Rockwell, but he has a much more modern feel to his work. He's the artist who did paintings for the Olympics in California as well as numerous sports heroes. He has many wonderful works that involve Americans at leisure.
Go visit the Franklin Bowles Gallery in San Fran...fantastic stuff!

Of the living American artist I would have to say the best are
1. Peter Max, though born in Europe and raised in China and other countries, he had his major development in the US and his "Pop Art" is very American in nature, his content exceeds Warhol and he has a variety of styles which most people don't realize beacuase his pop style is most noted. He also had the largest number of admissions in the history of the Hermitage in St Petersburg at his exhibit there.
2. LeRoy Neiman also has an original style and great talent. His subject selection of popular sports figures and actors has caused many to discount his art, but he has many excellent works which are of other subjects which are great.
3. Rockwell had a wnderful style but it was more oriented towards magazine covers and office reception areas.
4. Jackson Pollack is a great modern artist, just not to my taste.
5. Additionally, there are of course Okeefe, Homer, and a few others.
A new artist who I feel has great potential is Marcus Glenn. He has an orientation towards jazz and many of his pieces may be considered as directed towards a niche market, but htere is deep meaning in each of his works, even the floors in the art work has a special meaning. All his works evoke a special meaning, and his flat life works are great and unique in the fine art market.

Norman Rockwell is first on my list...the guy was awsome!
Jackson Pollock...i like the style, but i can replicate it fairly easily...(note i said nothing about being able to replicate Rockwell's style, perhaps i think that is hallowed ground, i dunno)
a modern living young artist named Jason Jeneke...AWSOME work going out of his studio. religious depictions, but way different from the old masters, this guy is making a nitch for himself right along side them, and any nonreligious individual can appreciate it.

Hi:
I think I'll have to vote for Maxfield Parrish - his work is absolutely glorious. He is actually considered the father of pop art.
