Because some people, Christians and non believers, are just incredibly selfish and judgmental.

Jude 1:22,23 says And of some have compassion,making a difference.And others save with fear,pulling them out of the fire;hating
even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Yes. You are half right. His teachings told us that love is to be first. BUT, He also told us that punishment from God is swift and sure for those that do not follow His ways. Moreover, He told us that FEW THERE BE that find the way unto life eternal. People's misguided beliefs, such as "once saved, always saved", and that the OT commandments do not apply any longer will send many people unto their punishment.

Maybe they think they need to give the law (scriptures of hell, judgement, etc.) to the proud and grace to the humble.

Grace for all, unless they go to their dying breath without believing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then eternal hell. That's pretty much the way Jesus said it.

Both elements must be taught in a balanced manner. Grace, forgiveness and love need the context of judgment and hell to be fully appreciated.

Because misery loves company. Sadly they were probably scared into their beliefs, not drawn in by love. The 2 prime motivators, fear and love.
