I highly doubt that it is a muscle 'tear' if you didn't experience the pain right away. I think that you are feeling the normal achiness of using unused muscles (which you can, of course, reduce by proper warm-ups and stretching afterwards). I don't have the answer to 3, but I don't think that you need to restrict your exercise based on the description you gave me. Using the stretches that would answer #3 should help with #1. Eventually, you will strengthen the muscle enough that this doesn't happen.

Muscle tare would create excrusiating immediate pain, and you'd probably go to the hospital ASAP.

Muscle sorness sounds like what you have. The best is to strech and keep active. You don't wanna lift weights ... but do the motion you were lifting the weights in during a step aerobic class. When you stop moving after heavy strain on your muscles you might start to feel a "rigamortus" cencation due to lack of movement. Again, streach and keep that muscel in motion!!!

Great strech for chest:
* Grabe a buddy. Sit back to back and join elbows. Angle Legs. Then try to get up. Fun, and streches your chest out.

* Hand behind head (rest of arm is a triangle) go to a corner on a wall and gently push elbow back.

* Join hands together behind back and lift upwards.

Yoga classes are also great at streching your whole body out.

Go to the local herb store and buy some of the hottest cayenne(chili)powder you can get. Get some extra virgin olive oil. In a small bowl mix the two until you have a mash, not quite a paste. After washing the area that hurts, apply the mash to that spot and let it dry. The heat brings the blood to the surface and helps heal the afflicted area quicker. Rinse off after a few hours. You can even do this for any aches and pains including arthritis. Begin stretching lightly after a couple of days and go from there, but slowly.
