I've had persistent acne for 4 years now, since 11. I'm 15 and thinking of asking my doctor to prescribe me Accutane. Minocycline4 and Proactiv was waste of money.

I tried everything for my acne like Proactive, Retin A, antibiotics, over the counter medications, injections in my face (ouch!), and finally Accutane. It worked wonders! I stayed on Accutane for about a year when I was 16 years old and it was the best thing I ever used for my acne.

I would HIGHLY recommend Accutane, especially if you have tried everything else. But, make sure you are FULLY aware of all the side effects. I became very depressed when I was on the medication, so you'll definitely want to be careful while taking it!

Good luck to you! I know how bad it can get!

Accutane's History

In the months after accutane's commercial release in 1982 it became evident that something was seriously wrong. By 1983 a number of public consumer groups began a

petition asking the FDA to force La Roche to include warning information with the drug.

These concerns escalated to cause another petition calling for an Accutane ban in 1988. Current statistics suggest that about 25 percent of Accutane pregnancy births

result in serious birth defects and 50 percent of the Accutane pregnancy births result in mental disability.

Guidelines for Females
1. Do not take Accutane if you are pregnant or if you could become pregnant during treatment or for one month after you stop taking Accutane.
2. Accutane is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that Accutane is known to cause severe birth defects in an unborn baby.
3. It can also cause miscarriage, premature birth, or death of the baby.
4. Two reliable forms of birth control must be used at the same time

I'd only recommend Accutane (Roaccutane) if your acne is cystic and scarring. You have to be on birth control while on it as having a baby while on roaccutane results in horrble birth defects. You also need regular liver function tests as the stuff is so toxic, it can damage your liver. It also makes you very very sun-sensitive to the point where a half hour in the sun can leave you with risen, blistering welts. You'll also get nosebleeds, whitlows on your nails, split lips and even vaginal thrush. It's a harsh treatment which some people have to remain on for over a year adn even then it isn't guaranteed to work. I know this because my sister had the worst cystic acne any doctor in three countries had ever seen. She was on it for a year and a half and went through hell... yes, she still gets pimples, though probably not as badly as before.
