I have had this lump for about 4 months now, it is on the left side of my back, between my lower rib and closer to my front side rather than the spine. No pain, is hard and fixed, went to my dr yesterday who said it is not a lipoma and is deeply embedded. Going to see a surgeon on the 21st of this month....what could be the cause??? My dr really could not tell me much of anything. Scared it is cancerous but cannot find on search engines for a mass like this. Anyone with medical knowledge or personal experience with something like this would be most appreciated.

It could be a tumor but it could also just be a cyst (a collection of benign cells under the skin or in a joint). If it's just below the skin and is not red, brown, or discolored it could quite possibly be a cyst. Typically, skin cancer (melanomas) are seen in the form of abrasions to the skin that dont heal or freckles that become discolored, raised, or have an odd shape. The best thing is to get it biopsied and removed by a physician.

Good luck!

I have one also, and the surgeon said it was a fatty tumor. But I am going to ask to have it removed. My nieces wife, had one on her leg, that she was told it was a fatty tumor. She didn't tell the doctor that it got bigger, and now she has sarcoma. Mine doesn't bother me, but neither did hers. It could also be a sebaceous cyst, which is not dangerous either. I think I would rather be safe than sorry.

I went to my Dr. last year for same thing. Mine is small and barely noticeable but I knew it was there because I could feel it. She said it is harmless and if I didn't bother it, it wouldn't bother me. I haven't done anything about it since then and it hasn't changed.
