He is a Labrador retriever/ Cocker Spaniel hybrid. We got him when he was 2 1/2 months. He bacame 6 months on August 6th. So far, I taught him how to sit, come, stay, lay down, speak, give me five, jump, and roll over so I know it's possible for him to learn how to stand up and hop in a circle. I tried holding a treat over his head but he would just jump real high for it when it was only about half a foot over his head where if he just stood up on his back legs he would have gotten it. Please help.

Thanks In Advance

Some dogs can naturally balance on two legs and can learn this very easily. My Keeshond natural goes up on her back legs. She would place for front feet on high objects to get a better view and then when I insisted that she not put her front feet on the table she got so that she wouldjust stand up on her back feet with out support. I once caught her taking food off a plate without even touching the table. (This trait is much more common for dogs that are square bodied that for dogs that are longer than they are tall). I have now taught her to "Dance" which means that she is to stand up and bounce around in a circle. Because she naturally stood up - that was not really traing just reinforcement of existing natural behavior then we shaped the circle one step at a time - requioring more and more each time before she got her treat.
Some dogs can never resonably get the balance of being on there hind legs and to try and teach this trick to them is unfair, and potentially dangerous to the dog.
If sounds as if your dogs does not naturally want ot be on its hind legs, and the breeds that it is decended from are not breeds that are normally associated with this type of behavior.
Try to identify what your dogs natural tendencies are develop tricks around that.
I had an accountant friend who's flat coat retreiver was very good at scent discrimination. So he would have all his friends put a dollar on the floor than her would put out and five and say his dog was so smart it know which was worth more. A friends mother had a dog that did math. The owner had articles that had numberson them. The dog had been trained to bring back the one with the owners scent. When they asked a math problem( ie How much is 10 minus 6 )and the dog brings back the right numbered item (which was the one that had the handlers scent on it.)
Good luck having fun teacing your dog new things. It is good to keep their brains active.

Hmmmmmmm.....i have always done the treat thing but you can try this. Try to pick up his front paws so he stands on his hind legs. Then let go and see if he balances. If he does balance say Hind Legs or what ever you would like to call the trick. Praise him when he does it correctly. And for the jumping around in a circle, since he already knows how to jump let him jump make him some how turn slightly say jump again and when he goes in a full circle praise him. Repetition is always good for dogs so make him do the tricks over and over. Good Luck! :-)

My Dog (Japenese Chin) learned himself. Whenever food is brought around he will sit on his back two lets and he can actually sit there for up to 5 mintutes. To teach a dog I would raise a treat in the air and say "beg" wait until the dog realizes what it should do, then give it the treat. Keep doing it, making the dog wait on it's two back legs longer and longer before you give it the treat. Of coarse depending on your breed, some dogs (smaller) have an easier time doing this than others (bigger).

You have trained your dog well to keep him out of trouble. I don't understand why people want animals to do tricks that they are not built to do. A dogs legs and torso are not structured to stand up straight.
Teaching a dog to sit, lay down and stay can be used for the dogs own safety.
Tricks are for the satisfaction of people not the animal.
I am not condemning you, I just don't get it.

You know that he can get into real trouble doing that if you teach him it. He can swipe thing off the table and it is just a pain in the neck if you do teach him. But still, I don't know how to teach dogs that.

i taught my dog how to stand on her hind legs, she looked like a little balerina, anyway heres how i did it. i held a peice of meat above her head and she tried reaching it , sometimes the dog will just jump for it, but SLOWLY lift it higher and higher and he will soon be standing up, then just try to balance him. just keep trying that everyday, then he'll learn the trick. but im sorry, i dont know how to get him to hop.

dangle a piece of meat. then lift it higher & higher. then eventually he'll be able 2 do it even when theres nothing in ur hand but he'll think there is. then to make him hop in a circle do the same thing but move ur hand in a circle=]

Why do you want to do that? Training a dog to do something that his body is not built for is like domestic torture. I will never give instructions how to domestically torture animals. I would say just to appreciate the bare love your dog gives you and not to train his body to do things that they were not created for!

how i taught my dog to stand on her hind legs is gently grab the dogs front legs and help the dog stand.and try to get the dog to stand when you pat your chest.then you should be able to get the dog to stand and spin at the same time.
