Yes.
Others must share the same space, which is not designed for eating. In fact, many subway systems I have traveled on specifically bar eating, with hefty fines.
Etiquette is all about being considerate toward others, and being able to expect the same in return.
I'm sure you expected that your subway seat would not be covered with food stains and food trash.
You did the right thing.

I find eating on the subway very rude and smelly but the subway's I've taken...D.C., San Franciscol do not allow food, drink, music without earphones or any rude behavior. It's so much nicer. You did the right thing.

I too take the subway and see people eating and never thougt rude of it. The only bad thing I could think of is if the food smells so bad that it annoys the people around you or if one creates a big mess.

I dont think is rude to eat on the subway; i see people eating on the subway all the times we just need to be clean considerate if you are hungry or need to take medicine i guest it will be alright but if you feel bad them just dont do it. it really depend on the person you did the right thing.

I don't think there would have been anything wrong with eating on the subway as long as you didn't leave a mess behind.

It's nice of you to be so considerate, but I don't think it would be rude so long as the subway wasn't so crammed that you would be practically eating on someone's lap or spilling it on the person next to you.
If you are hungry, go ahead and eat. But just be courteous not to drop the food on someone.

Saw a woman on the subway one morning, hair in curlers, getting ready for work.
She fixed her hair, applied make-up, then ate a boiled egg and some toast.
Go figure.
If you are hungry and it doesn't smell like a boiled egg, go for it.
