I recently got my first tattoo this past weekend, and all I can say is RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH! I just typed in what I wanted to find on yahoo or google, and looked at the pictures they had. But as you will probably find out, don't get something so detailed, because then they would have to make the tattoo bigger then you probably want it. Beware of people who say "yeah I'll do that detailed of a tattoo, that small size that you want." The tattoo will begin to blob together in a few years and won't look good. These are people just wanting to take your money and not thinking of your happiness in 5 years. What do they care? They got your money 5 years ago. Also keep in mind the tattoo parlor you plan on getting it at, they most likely have a book full of butterflies that they have done, because it is a common tattoo. Good Luck!
And as for those people making negative comments about tattoos, ignore them. Yes you'll feel clean after you take a shower. A Tattoo is a sense of you (or it's supposed to be). It's removable, a little pricey, but I'm sure some of those snobby people making it sound so demeaning, can afford it. And there's always the option of covering it with something better.

Number one...DON'T be in a rush to get a tat! It's a forever thing. I highly recommend finding a picture that you'd like to do for a tat, print it out and put it someplace you'll see it everyday. If you still like it after a month or so, then go for it. Having been around tattoo studios, I have seen WAY too many people that have tats they hate because they made a hasty choice.
Second, butterflies really ARE unoriginal. Consider what you want your tat to symbolize and do some research. I promise, there are so many cool tattoo designs out there, you'll come across that perfect one in time.

Four of my eight tattoos are butterflies. I LOVE them, however, an idea would be to look on-line for pics of actual species of lepidoptera, and print out the ones that you think would make the prettiest tattoo(s).

That link might actually save you the trouble!

I have one on the back of my right shoulder, it is entwined in a red rose :}
If you decide to get one, you should draw your idea or have someone who is good at drawing draw it for you, the more original it is the better, don't choose a design off the wall that everyone else can get! The whole point of a tattoo is to be unique, like you :}

Seems like everyone got butterfly tattoos in the 90s. If you really want them, have them look really realistic instead of that cartoony look.
What about a palm tree or some seashells or the flower from your birth month or something that relates to your hobby.
Butterflies would have to really have significance to me to ever get those.

go to Borders or Barnes and Noble and buy a book on butterflies, you will have so many to choose from and the artist can see exactly which one you want as a reference

my friend sister has blue stars with black outlines in all different sizes on her ankle and on the back of her shoulder. i think that would look cute with butterflies but dont get them too big or intracate so ppl wont notice it if you dont want them to on certain occasions. you might want to gett a henna tatoo first so you can see how you like and how other ppl like it. dont get it very colorful either
