There are several that beat McAfee and Norton on a regular basis. They just don't have the advertising dollars behind them like these top sellers do. Bit-Defender, ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are among the best rated at the moment.
Of course, it all depends on whose reviews you tend to believe and McAfee and Norton are still better than having nothing. I've used them both and was very dissatisfied with the protection they provided. Norton used to crash my Windows XP system regularly and one version of McAfee would not even install and I had to return it. Both have histories of being somewhat flakky and failed to catch several viruses.
I've indicated a couple reviews that I tend to trust below.

Bit subjective. I've been using McAfee for the last 11 months, and after the one-year licence expires, I'll be moving to Norton to try that for a year.

Both Norton and McAfee will eat up your computer's resources. I can't recommend either.

Norton is technically better but it does chew up system resources. So unless u have a mid to high end computer, go with mcafee.
BTW: ive used norton for 7 years and lovin it. It is one of the more buggy pieces of software ive dealt with so if youre not too knowledgable on computer i wouldnt get norton.
Norton Pros- Better Virus Removal, Better Virus Detection, Always up to date
Mcafee Pros- Light on system resources, more crash-free. More options
Norton Cons- Can be unstable and require a bit of maintenence. Not easy to identify software bugs, especially in older versions.
Mcafee Cons- Not so good virus detection, very hard to un-install.

Neither, they both drain your system's resources. The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32.
I only recommend NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

Norton would be the better for high spec machines with fast processors but McAffee is more suited to commodity PCs. Norton slows down commodity PCs and is does not work well with Celeron PCs. But Norton offers better protection.

Both are fine products that are easy to install and do a good job keeping your system clean.
You might check with your Internet provider as many provide McAfee for free (Comcast and AOL are examples).

Neither actually, but if you have to choose between these two only.. then McAfee is much better.

Neither... Both will cause system slowdowns and you will be very frustrated. Personally, I use AVG, the free version. You can also get a free version of many other virus scanners as well. You can also scan it online, but it doesn't provide you the same Real Time protection.
free.grisoft.com is the website for AVG.
Good Luck
