The vet has him on antibiotics. Could it be kennel cough? Its more of a gag than a cough. Any ideas?

Unfortunately you didn't give much info. Apparently the vet has him on antibiotics for some reason. Didn't he tell you what he thought the problem was? I am assuming that the "hacking" was the reason the vet put him on medication and not that the medication made him start hacking. I hope I'm correct.

Kennel cough happens when dogs come into contact with other dogs who have kennel cough. If your dog is around alot of other dogs then kennel cough is a possibility. Gagging however sounds different than a cough. If your dog is not getting any better, I would suggest giving the vet another call. Apparently your dog is not feeling well and I would hate for this to get worse. Have you checked the dog's throat to see if there is something stuck? I am going to be worrying about your dog all night. If it were my dog I would be calling the vet back or going to an emergency vet clinic. Hope you are able to help your dog out.

It could be, but it also could be what we in the dog world like to call...a "backwards sneeze." I am not a vet, so only take my words so seriously. I do however work with dogs and my dog went through a period of doing the about a month or two ago. Kennel couch is more of a hack....just make sure to keep your pet up to date on their shots. I'm pretty sure your vet would have tested your dog if they thought it was kennel cough, because that is a very serious infection. I don't know where you live, but it could also be there weather. Dry, humid weather can bring this on, along with allergies. As long as your dog has is shots and yur vet is involved, I would not be worried! This is a fairly common thing in dogs.

Best to ask your vet to be sure. Sounds like maybe kennel cough or perhaps your dog has allergies. One of my dogs gets respitory allergies and she does that often.

What kind of dog?.. Beagles (and a few other breeds) commonly have something called reverse sneezing which looks like his is gagging.. he looks like he can't breathe at the same time.. it's distressing to the owners but not harmful to the dog.. I have not found any info about why they have this problem.. (but it seems to be mostly scent hounds)

I have a Chihuahua who did something similar to that and they gave him all kinds of medication and he eventually quit, but still every now and then he will do it. I really think its sinus problems, kinda like flem or something.
